The atmosphere is more polished waterfront hotel than small dive lodge. There are 113 rooms, local art and photography in the interiors, a gallery, meeting spaces and a broad open layout. That makes it workable for couples, families and travellers mixing diving with wine country, beaches, golf or the wider Western Cape.

You can keep the day simple here. Breakfast, a swim, a treatment, dinner and a drink overlooking the boats are all on the same small peninsula. Sometimes that is enough planning for one day.

You are in Gordon's Bay, South Africa, on the Harbour Island peninsula rather than in Hermanus. The hotel sits beside a private marina and directly on the waterfront, with only a boardwalk separating the property from the sea. Mountain, ocean and marina views come as part of the geography, not as a heroic expedition from the front door.

Cayman Beach is about 0.4 miles away, while Gordon's Bay Main Beach is about 0.6 miles away on foot. Bikini Beach is about 1 mile away by road and is within walking distance. The property has direct access to a white sandy beach with sun loungers and parasols, while the surrounding bay gives you several different places for a stroll or a swim.

You are also well placed for land-based days. Stellenbosch is about 15 miles away, Harmony Flats Nature Reserve about 1.5 miles, and Kogelberg Nature Reserve about 8 miles. Cape Town International Airport is about 23 miles away by road, and the Strand railway station is about 3 miles away.

The self-catering suite is the practical option if you want more independence around meals.

The duplex adds a separate two-level layout, while the family room keeps the arrangement more conventional.

Krystal Bar is the quieter lobby bar for local wines, aperitifs, cocktails, tea and coffee; Oh La La Cocktail Lounge sits at the water's edge with signature cocktails, craft beer, gourmet milkshakes, light meals and bar snacks. Halal and kosher meals can be arranged, and special-diet menus are available.

The outdoor pool is on the first floor beside Krystal Komfort Spa, with a modern deck, loungers and views across the marina. Pool and beach towels are available, and the direct beach access gives you a second place to sit when floating in chlorinated water has had its turn. The sea is close enough for a change of scenery without turning relaxation into another transfer.

Krystal Komfort Spa has three treatment rooms and a manicure and pedicure lounge. You can book a massage, facial, manicure or pedicure, with the spa also offering broader therapeutic and wellness treatments. The gym is on the upper floor and has views over the decks, although it is perfectly reasonable to treat it as a scenic landmark on the way to the pool.

When you want more movement, the hotel can arrange sailing, jet skiing, boat trips, deep-sea fishing, water skiing and sunset cruises by catamaran or motor yacht. On land, you can look towards golf, cycling, horse riding and hiking. Wine estates around Stellenbosch and Helderberg, penguin viewing at Stony Point, whale watching between July and October, and nature reserves including Kogelberg and Helderberg widen the options for a non-diving day. There is also live music, evening entertainment, temporary art galleries and the Ndiza Art Gallery with paintings and sculptures.
