Mariner Guesthouse & Villa

Owner-run and built into the mountainside, Mariner Guesthouse and Villa is a small Simon's Town base with a distinctly residential feel rather than the polished anonymity of a large hotel. The four-storey house looks across the harbour and False Bay, with classic and modern décor, a light maritime touch, and a double-volume lounge where leather sofas, oriental rugs and a wood-burning fireplace do the work when the Cape weather turns cooler.

The owners are involved in the day-to-day running of the guesthouse, and the team speaks English, Afrikaans and isiXhosa. That matters when you are arranging an early start, a packed lunch or simply trying to explain that your back has had enough excitement for one day. Free WiFi runs throughout the property, and the shared lounge gives you somewhere to sit without retreating straight to bed.

The house suits divers who want False Bay within reach, but also want a proper town around them: beaches, restaurants, museums and outdoor activities are all part of the stay. Families are welcome, and the larger accommodation works for groups who would rather share a house than occupy a row of unrelated rooms.

You are in Simon's Town, South Africa, on the mountainside above the harbour and within walking distance of the town centre. The property is close to the sea, but it is not a flat, beachfront address: the walk down is straightforward, while the return involves a hill. Your legs may remember that distinction more clearly than the brochure does.

Seaforth Beach is about 0.7 miles away on foot, and Boulders Beach is about 1.1 miles away. The African penguin colony at Boulders is one of the obvious outings, while Water's Edge Beach is around 0.7 miles away by road. Restaurants and cafés in Simon's Town are roughly 0.7 miles away on foot, including Quarterdeck International Coffee Shop, Cafe Pescado and Frans Place.

For time away from the water, the Toy Museum and Collectors Shop is about 0.9 miles away, and the South African Naval Museum is about 1 mile away. Cape Town International Airport is about 24 miles away by road. The guesthouse recommends a hire car for exploring the peninsula; Uber is available from Cape Town or the airport, but not always reliably in Simon's Town.

Every unit has a private bathroom, air conditioning, heating, satellite television, WiFi, a microwave, a bar fridge and tea- and coffee-making facilities. That is the useful sort of luxury: somewhere to cool a bottle of water, warm something small, and let the room take the edge off a day spent in salt water and neoprene. Most rooms also have balconies, and all rooms have sea views, with mountain views available in some categories.

For two people, the Luxury Studio with Balcony with Seaview is the obvious choice if the view and outdoor space matter to you. A super-king bed gives you room to spread out, while the balcony provides a place for the first coffee before the day's plans begin. The Double Room options keep things simpler, and the twin rooms make practical sense if you and your dive partner prefer separate beds rather than negotiating territory after a long day.

Families have more room to manoeuvre. The Family Unit links two Sail Rooms with an interleading door, giving adults and children separate sleeping spaces while keeping private access between them. The Family Apartment is aimed at longer stays and self-catering, with two bedrooms, a full kitchen, a sleeper couch in the barbecue area and an enclosed garden. The Luxury Villa is the group-scale option, with eight bathrooms and space for a large party; it makes more sense when several divers are travelling together than when two people are simply looking for a bed.

Breakfast is included with the standard accommodation and is served in the dining room, where large windows look over the ocean and open onto a protected veranda. You get a continental buffet, with a hot breakfast available from the à la carte menu. Vegetarian, vegan, halal, gluten-free and kosher choices are available, and breakfast can also be taken to go or brought to your room.

The kitchen uses local produce where possible, along with herbs from the guesthouse garden. Lunches, dinners and picnic baskets can be arranged, while limited room service covers these options when requested in advance. That gives you a useful alternative to hunting for a table when you are hungry, tired and still wearing the face of someone who has spent the afternoon wrestling with a wetsuit.

There is one Honesty Bar in the dining area and guest rooms, operating on a self-service basis. You also have barbecue facilities and outdoor furniture, so the evening can be as simple as cooking something yourself, having a drink and watching the light leave False Bay.

The spacious lounge, veranda, sun terrace and garden give you several places to slow down without turning the whole afternoon into organised entertainment. An outdoor fireplace and barbecue area extend the useful part of the day, while board games and a shared television lounge cover the occasional weather-bound evening. Daily housekeeping, luggage storage and concierge service keep the practical side of the stay in order.

Outside the guesthouse, Simon's Town supplies the non-diving divers' menu. You can walk to Seaforth Beach or Boulders Beach, follow hiking trails, hire a bicycle, take a walking or bike tour, visit the Toy Museum, Simon's Town Museum or South African Naval Museum, and explore the shops in town. A Ghost Walk, wine tasting, pottery painting and cultural visits add variety when the sea is not cooperating.

The wider area also offers kayaking, kitesurfing, fishing, boat trips, horse riding, snorkelling, wildlife outings and golf. Families can use the beach, museums and local excursions as straightforward shared activities, while babysitting and a children's menu add a little practical help around the edges.

Cape Town International Airport is about 24 miles away by road, and an airport shuttle can be arranged on request. A car is useful if you plan to cover the Cape Peninsula, although the town centre, beaches and restaurants are reachable on foot. Follow the main roads rather than trusting a sat-nav's idea of the shortest route, and use the upper entrance for reception.

Check-in runs from 14:00 to 21:00, and check-out from 07:00 to 10:00. You need to give the guesthouse your expected arrival time, and photo identification and a credit card are required at check-in. Luggage storage, private or express check-in and check-out, concierge service and free on-site parking are available.

Children of all ages are welcome, with cots and extra beds available for selected accommodation. Pets are allowed in balcony rooms, but must stay out of the dining room and be kept on a lead or in a carrier. Smoking is not allowed indoors, and quiet hours run from 22:00 to 08:00; parties and similar events are not permitted.

The guesthouse was designed around natural light and ventilation, with a north-facing position that makes use of natural energy. Solar water heaters supply hot water, while energy-saving bulbs and air-conditioning settings reduce unnecessary use. The building also runs on solar power.

A native fynbos garden needs little irrigation, and plastic, paper and glass are recycled. Laundry and washing-up products are phosphate-free and biodegradable, while toiletries are water-based, biodegradable, phosphate-free and not tested on animals. Sheets and towels are changed every three days unless you request otherwise.

The kitchen uses organic and free-range food where possible, adds herbs from the garden, and sends food waste to a local pig farm. It is a practical collection of measures rather than a slogan, which is the more useful way to approach a stay in a place whose main attraction is the landscape outside the window.
