You come here for a proper base between outings: beachfront access, a swimming pool looking out towards the sea, shaded recovery indoors and enough going on around the resort to keep non-diving days from turning into an endurance test. InterContinental Dominica Cabrits Resort & Spa is set up for couples, families and divers who appreciate having the practical bits close at hand rather than scattered along the coast.

The tone is polished but usable. Air conditioning, soundproofing, room service, a bar, a coffee shop and a spa all matter more when you return warm, salty and hungry than they do in a brochure. Add the garden, terraces, sun loungers and outdoor seating, and you have several places to settle without being sent back to your room every time you want to sit down.

Families are properly catered for, with family and interconnecting rooms, a kids' club, indoor and outdoor play areas, a playground and board games. Couples get a quieter set of choices, including sea-view rooms, suites and couples' massages. The resort allows children of any age and also welcomes pets.

The resort sits in Portsmouth, Dominica, directly on the beachfront. That gives you the simple version of island geography: the sea is not an excursion, and the beach is not something you reach by negotiating a hotel shuttle and three car parks. Purple Turtle Beach is about 1.8 miles away, while the resort itself has beachfront access.

Portsmouth is close enough for a change of scene without making every meal an expedition. Rosie's Bar is roughly 0.1 mile away, Corner Cafe about 0.2 mile, and The Thirsty Parrot Pub around 0.4 mile, with a seven-minute walk listed for the latter. Useful when you fancy a drink beyond the resort and do not want to turn it into an evening project.

For flying in, Douglas-Charles Airport is about 21 miles by road, with a drive of around 36 minutes. Canefield Airport is about 22 miles away by road, with a drive of around 34 minutes. Les Saintes Airport is listed at about 22 miles, but without a road connection; it is not the one to plan around for a normal hotel transfer.

The standard rooms give two people room to unpack properly rather than stack dive clothing on top of the minibar. A Premium King Room works for a couple who want a super-king bed, while the twin version keeps sleeping arrangements straightforward for two travelling companions. Ocean-view versions add the thing you actually notice on a Caribbean island: the sea outside the balcony rather than merely appearing in the resort's name.

For a couple staying longer, the One-Bedroom Suite or the Kweyol Suite gives you a separate living area and more space to spread out. The Grand Suite with Ocean View is the more obvious choice when the view is part of the holiday, while the Emerald Pool Suite adds direct pool access. Families have larger options, including the Cabrits Suite and the two-bedroom Kalinago Villa with its private pool; interconnected rooms are also available.

Every room category is built around recovery rather than decoration alone. Air conditioning and a ceiling fan help after a hot day outdoors, while soundproofing is useful when you want the door shut and the day finished. Sea views and balconies feature in the accommodation range, and rooms also come with a minibar, flat-screen television, seating area, desk, private bathroom, bath or shower, bathrobe, slippers and toiletries.

Daily housekeeping and room service remove two small jobs from the evening. If mobility matters, wheelchair-accessible facilities are available, including toilets with grab rails, and a King Room with Roll-In Shower is part of the accommodation range.

Two restaurants keep the dining arrangements on site rather than making you plan every evening around a taxi. The main restaurant works with local and international cooking and includes vegetarian choices, so you can move from island flavours to something familiar without treating dinner like a negotiation. Outdoor seating gives you the option of eating in the open air.

Breakfast comes as a continental, vegan, gluten-free or buffet selection, with fresh pastries, pancakes, cheese and fruit. The swimming pool and sun terrace are the obvious places to spend a no-plans afternoon, with a view that does some of the work for you. Sun loungers, beach chairs, umbrellas, pool and beach towels, a garden and outdoor furniture make it possible to stop moving without having to retreat indoors. There is even an outdoor fireplace and a picnic area for a change of setting.

The spa is more than a name on a sign: it includes a sauna, steam room, hot tub, relaxation lounge, foot bath and spa facilities. Massage options cover the head, neck, back, hands, feet and full body, with couples' massages available as well. The fitness centre gives you somewhere to stretch the legs, although after a full day outdoors, nobody will force you to prove anything.

On land, you can play tennis, use the tennis equipment, hire bicycles, join walking tours or go hiking. Billiards provides a slower option. Snorkelling and water-sport facilities are available on site, while horse riding and fishing take place off site. Families have a kids' club, play areas, a playground, board games and children's meals.

Check-in starts from 15:00 and check-out runs until 12:00. You must be at least 18 to check in, and the property asks for photo identification and a credit card on arrival. Let the resort know your expected arrival time, particularly if you are arranging the airport shuttle; transfers are available through the hotel.
