Koh Ma, Koh Phangan: Reefs, Wrecks, and Anemone Gardens

Koh Ma presents a distinct profile off Koh Phangan, offering varied underwater topography. While it can occasionally be accessed as a beach dive under specific weather conditions, the primary entry point is typically by boat, allowing direct access to the fringing reefs and the deeper artificial structures. The site naturally transitions from shallow coral gardens closer to the island's edge down to a plateau where artificial reefs have been established, making for a dive with clear depth progression and different environments to explore.

The shallow sections of Koh Ma are dominated by a flourishing fringing reef, characterized by hard corals and rocky outcrops. Here, you’ll find an active nursery ground for juvenile fish alongside a variety of crustaceans. Keep a keen eye on the crevices and under ledges; this is where various shrimp and crab species often make their homes, providing opportunities for macro observation in well-lit, calmer waters. The intricate coral formations, including massive, tabular, staghorn, and fan corals, are notably in excellent condition, indicating a healthy ecosystem.

Further out and deeper, Koh Ma sets itself apart with its artificial reef installations. In 2021, three wrecks were intentionally sunk here to foster new marine habitats. These structures now rest at depths ranging from 16 to 30 metres. These wrecks are designed for straightforward diving, offering clear penetration points and stable mooring areas, which makes them accessible for divers gaining experience with wreck exploration without the complex navigation of older, naturally occurring vessels.

The wrecks quickly drew marine life, establishing themselves as artificial nurseries. Expect to see early colonizers such as barracuda and schooling jacks making these structures their new home. You’ll observe how these submerged vessels contribute to the local biodiversity, providing shelter and hunting grounds. The transition from the natural reef to these artificial structures highlights an active conservation effort, demonstrating how purposeful sinkings can rapidly integrate into the local marine environment and attract a new range of species.

One of the site's distinctive features is a substantial anemone garden, which spans over 30 metres. This vibrant area is home to an abundance of anemonefish, actively guarding their host anemones. Observing their symbiotic relationship and protective behaviours provides a focused experience within this specific section of the reef. The density of anemones and their resident fish creates a vivid landscape, contrasting with the hard coral sections and the darker profiles of the wrecks.

Conditions at Koh Ma are often placid, particularly in the shallower reef areas. The sheltered waters around the island generally experience minimal current, allowing for relaxed diving and extended bottom times, especially within the upper 20 metres. Visibility is typically good, allowing clear views of the extensive coral formations and the structure of the wrecks. This calm environment contributes to the site's accessibility and makes it suitable for training dives and longer explorations alike.
