Diving Krabi: limestone islands, shallow walls and Andaman day boats

Krabi is a coastal base for boat diving around the islands and rocky sites of the Andaman Sea, not a liveaboard destination built solely around divers. The practical appeal is the ability to combine several diving days with beaches, limestone scenery and inland excursions. Underwater, Koh Haa Lagoon gives a useful contrast: a protected, shallow start from 5 metres before the outer reef drops towards 40 metres, with walls, barracuda and macro life.

Diving around Krabi is shaped by rocky reefs, shallow walls, drop-offs and island sites reached by day boat. Koh Haa Lagoon begins in sheltered water at about 5 metres, making the lagoon suitable for buoyancy practice or an uncomplicated first immersion, while the outer reefs offer deeper sections down to 40 metres. Currents are variable across the area, though conditions at Koh Haa are generally mild to moderate. Visibility is not fixed: it is usually more dependable from November to April and can be affected by swell, runoff and seasonal mixing. Boat days often involve several closely timed dives, so a personal computer is useful, and Nitrox can make sense for suitably qualified divers. In high season, early departures matter because the most accessible sites fill with boats as the day progresses.

Barracuda schools are one of the more tangible encounters around the walls and outer reef areas, while macro life and occasional nudibranchs reward slower inspection of the rock and reef surfaces. Koh Haa Lagoon is particularly well suited to switching between broad views and close observation: one moment may involve watching fish over the wall, the next finding small life along the reef. Whale sharks and manta rays are possible regional sightings, but they are rare rather than reliable reasons to book a specific week. The same applies to whale sharks at this level of documentation: they should be treated as fortunate additions, not an itinerary promise. The most consistent wildlife experience comes from taking time over the reef rather than expecting a single headline animal.

The clearest working season is from November to April, when the measured pattern also indicates the calmest sea. Rainfall is generally lower from December to April, while the wider Andaman season becomes less settled from May through October as the monsoon brings more swell, variable visibility and a greater chance of cancelled or uncomfortable boat trips. November and December can be busier, with more divers and boats at the easier sites, but the trade-off is a more dependable diving programme. The dry-season window suits a five- to seven-day stay because it leaves room for several boat days without making every planned dive dependent on one weather forecast.

Krabi suits all recreational levels, provided divers are comfortable adjusting to changing current and sea conditions. Beginners can stay with the shallow lagoon at Koh Haa Lagoon, while more experienced divers can make use of the deeper outer reef sections. The destination is compatible with PADI, SSI and BSAC training backgrounds. Nitrox is useful on multi-dive boat days, although the deeper parts of the outer reef still require the appropriate qualification and experience. This is not a place where an advanced card is automatically necessary; judgement about conditions matters more than collecting a particular label.

From London Heathrow, London Gatwick or Manchester, Krabi is reached through the onward combination available for the chosen itinerary; the destination itself is then handled as a land-based stay with local road and boat transfers. Depending on the starting point, access to the area may involve a domestic flight, a road journey or a ferry, so the final connection should not be treated as a direct arrival at a dive site. Once in Krabi, divers normally reach the port or dive centre by taxi, shuttle or on foot when staying near the waterfront or Ao Nang. Allow time for the road transfer and embarkation rather than planning a tight sequence of connections. Accommodation in Krabi Town or Ao Nang is most convenient when its port transfer is straightforward.

Keep the first boat departures in mind during the dry-season high season: the sites closest to Krabi become busier as the morning develops. Reserve the more sought-after days several days ahead, especially if the itinerary is meant to reach sites farther from the coast rather than repeating the most convenient island runs. Ask before departure whether the route enters Hat Noppharat Thara–Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park, since park rules, fees and navigation arrangements then form part of the day. In protected areas, check that the boat uses a mooring or controlled anchoring procedure, not an anchor dropped onto reef. Carry a personal dive computer if the day includes several immersions. After rough weather, leave the more exposed sites until the sea has settled; visibility and comfort can change quickly. Do not plan the whole stay around close coastal trips, and do not assume the monsoon months will feel like the dry season.

A five- to seven-day stay works well as a balance between several boat days and time ashore. Accommodation in Ao Nang or Krabi Town keeps the practical journey to the port manageable, while the non-diving options are substantial: island and beach trips, short walks to viewpoints, and excursions through the limestone hinterland. A quieter beach or non-diving boat day is sensible before flying, particularly after a busy run of multiple-immersion days.
