  • Accessible as a shore entry dive
  • Moderate depth profile for various experience levels

Gamela about the site

Gamela is positioned directly in front of Vila do Corvo Quay, a short distance from the shore. This makes it an accessible site, often approached directly from the shore. The dive begins over an extensive, relatively shallow platform that ranges from 6 to 10 metres deep, offering a sheltered environment ideal for acclimatising to the water and observing reef life. This platform forms the core of the site, serving as a rich habitat that belies its proximity to the harbour.

As you traverse the shallow platform, you will find two distinct, small caves. These offer a chance to explore a different kind of topography, providing shelter for various smaller marine species. Moving towards the edges of the reef, the bottom begins to drop off, gradually descending to a maximum depth of around 20 metres. This transition allows for a shift in perspective, moving from the confined spaces of the caves to the more open water at the reef's periphery.

Beyond the reef edges, at approximately 12 metres, the environment opens into a more pelagic zone. This quick transition from a shallow, intricate reef structure to deeper water makes Gamela unique compared to other, often deeper or more exposed sites around Corvo. While primarily a reef dive, this oceanic interface increases the chances of encountering larger marine life moving in from the open water, even at these moderate depths.

The topography of Gamela is compact, offering a concentrated dive experience. Its sheltered position near the quay means that while current can vary, especially along the reef edges or with local tidal shifts, conditions near the shore are often calm. This allows for a relaxed exploration of both the shallow platform and the deeper drop-off without contending with excessive water movement, making it a good site for focused observation.

Diving conditions

Gamela is accessible to Open Water Divers with basic buoyancy control, making it a suitable site for those refining their skills. The dive depth ranges from a minimum of 6 metres over the shallow platform to a maximum of 20 metres at the reef's edge. Current conditions are variable; while often calm near the quay due to its sheltered position and moderate depths, you should anticipate potential moderate currents around the edges of the reef, particularly with local weather changes or tidal movement.
