Ocean Reef Yacht Club & Resort is a three-star resort built around suites, apartments and townhouses rather than a run of identical hotel rooms, with a marina, a restaurant and plenty of space for couples, families or a small group of divers travelling together.

The tone is more home-from-home than formal hotel. Some accommodation comes with a proper living area, kitchen facilities and outdoor space, while the resort adds two pools, a fitness centre and a poolside bar. You can come back from the water, put the kettle on, sit outside and decide whether the evening requires dinner, a swim or absolutely nothing more strenuous than finding the remote.

The resort has a 55-slip marina, but it is not a hotel where you simply step over the lawn and onto a named sandy beach: Coral Beach is about 1.5 miles away, Silver Point Beach about 1.2 miles away on foot, and East Palm Beach roughly 1 mile away by car.

A scheduled shuttle takes guests to selected beaches and to a supermarket, which is useful when the afternoon has already taken its share of your energy. Lucaya Beach is about 2 miles away by car, while Taino Beach is about 4.5 miles away. A few restaurants sit within roughly 1.5 miles, including Bernies Tiki Hut and New Level, and Grand Bahama International Airport is about 5 miles away, around a 15-minute drive.

The accommodation works particularly well when you want more than a bed and a wardrobe. The one-bedroom apartments and the larger townhouses give you room to spread out, with a seating area, dining table and kitchen equipment that includes a refrigerator, microwave, toaster, kettle and coffee machine. That means cold drinks and a quick bite are within reach when returning hungry, rather than an expedition to the restaurant becoming the final activity of the day.

For two, the studio with balcony keeps things straightforward, with a king-size bed and sofa bed. For a family or a group, a two- or three-bedroom townhouse gives everyone a better chance of retaining both personal space and civilised relations. The larger options include up to two bathrooms, while suites with hot tubs add a more deliberate end to the day. You can choose outdoor space where the category provides a balcony, patio or terrace, with garden or other views available across the accommodation.

Air conditioning matters in the Bahamas, particularly when you are trying to recover from heat, salt and a full day outside. Rooms also have a flat-screen cable television, private bathroom, towels and a hairdryer, and daily housekeeping keeps the practical side moving. Some accommodation includes laundry facilities, which is handy when dive kit, swimwear and ordinary clothes begin competing for the same chair.

Oceans Blue Restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner on its terrace, from 8am to 10pm. Breakfast is continental and buffet-style, served in the restaurant, so you can start with something familiar before heading out rather than making the first decision of the day a complicated one.

The cooking covers local and international dishes, with Bahamian specialities such as cracked conch and local seafood alongside homemade hamburgers, sandwiches and steaks. It is a useful range after diving: something local when you want to eat like you are in the Bahamas, and something uncomplicated when your appetite has become more theoretical than selective.

There is a snack bar and a pool bar, with one of the pools equipped with its own swim-up bar. You also have outdoor dining areas, barbecue facilities and kitchen equipment in the accommodation, so the evening can stay poolside, restaurant-based or pleasantly self-sufficient. Special-diet menus are available on request.

Two outdoor pools give you an easy non-diving plan, including one with a swim-up bar. Sun loungers, beach chairs, umbrellas, pool and beach towels, a sun terrace and garden areas cover the part of the day when lying down is not merely acceptable but clearly the correct decision. A free fitness centre and fitness classes are available if your legs still have an opinion after the dive boat.

On land, you can play tennis, cycle, use the games room, try table tennis or billiards, and hire bicycles. A golf course is within 3 miles. On the water, kayaking and snorkelling add something to do without committing to another full diving day, while boat hire and marina rental are available through the resort arrangements.

Evenings have a lighter, organised side: movie nights, entertainment, karaoke and a Thursday karaoke night are part of the programme. The resort also offers local culture tours, bike tours and occasional happy-hour activity. Couples can keep things simple with a pool, a drink and dinner; families have a playground, games and outdoor play equipment to occupy younger travellers.

Grand Bahama International Airport is roughly 5 miles away, with the journey taking about 15 minutes by car. An airport shuttle can be arranged with the resort, and the scheduled local shuttle serves selected beaches and a supermarket. Car hire is also available, which may suit you if you want to move between beaches and restaurants rather than work around shuttle times.

Check-in starts at 4pm and check-out is by 10am. The property asks you to share your expected arrival time, and a refundable damage deposit is taken by card on arrival. The minimum age for check-in is 21; guests under 18 can check in only with a parent or official guardian. Private check-in and check-out, concierge assistance, a tour desk and luggage storage are available.

Parking is free on site, and Wi-Fi is available in the resort. The property has lift access to upper floors and facilities including a wheelchair-accessible layout, a lower bathroom sink and toilets with grab rails. Visa and Mastercard are accepted, while cash is not accepted.
