Maldives Passions (The Underwater Institute) Baa Maalhos

The Underwater Institute by Maldives Passions is a long-established dive centre situated on the island of Maalhos, positioned within the Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. This location places you at the doorstep of some of the most significant marine ecosystems in the Maldives, specifically the protected waters of Hanifaru Bay.

Operating since 2016, the centre has built a reputation for professionalism and safety, earning TripAdvisor's 'Best Attraction' award for twelve consecutive years. It serves as a gateway to the diverse underwater topography of the atoll, from shallow reef flats to dramatic vertical walls.

The centre is affiliated with SSI and provides a comprehensive range of training through both SSI and PADI programmes. Instruction is available for all levels, from the Bubblemaker programme for children through to professional certifications such as Divemaster and Assistant Instructor.

The team provides instruction in English and Italian, ensuring clear communication for international divers. Whether you are looking to specialise in Nitrox, Night Diving, or Drift Diving, the staff focuses on technical proficiency and safety within the local environment.

A full spectrum of SSI and PADI courses is offered on-site. Beginners can start with Discover Scuba Diving or the Bubblemaker programme, eventually progressing through to Open Water and Advanced Open Water certifications.

For those looking to advance their skills or career, the centre provides training for Divemaster and Assistant Instructor levels. Specialist training is also available, including Nitrox, Night Diving, Drift Diving, and Manta Diving courses.

Dives depart from a traditional Maldivian dhoni, a local vessel capable of carrying up to 30 divers. The boat is equipped with freshwater showers and toilets, and features a large solar deck for relaxing between dives.

The dhoni is used for various trip types, including standard morning and afternoon dives, as well as night dives. Nitrox is available on board to support extended bottom times during your excursions.

The centre maintains a well-equipped shore base with 30 Aqualung sets available for hire. For those preferring to bring their own kit, the facility is designed to support local divers with ease.

Air is supplied by two Coltri compressors, supplemented by a dedicated Nitrox compressor. The cylinder inventory includes 90 aluminium cylinders in 7, 11, and 13-litre capacities, ensuring a variety of options for different buoyancy and gas management requirements.

The surrounding waters are home to a vast array of reef life. You will regularly encounter surgeonfish, parrotfish, groupers, and clownfish amongst the hard and soft corals. Larger residents include moray eels, turtles, and various species of rays.

In the open water and along the walls, the biodiversity increases with sightings of tuna, jacks, and sharks. You may also see sailfish and dolphins passing through the area.

The ecosystem is defined by its rich coral architecture, with a heavy presence of both hard corals and colourful soft corals covering the thilas and reef slopes. This provides the essential structure for the many reef fish that inhabit the atoll.

Diving conditions in the Baa Atoll vary depending on the specific site. The outside reefs generally experience low to moderate currents, making them accessible for a wide range of divers.

In contrast, the Reef Passes are subject to medium to strong currents as water moves between the lagoon and the ocean. These sites require more advanced buoyancy control and experience. The thilas can also experience variable currents depending on the tide and local conditions.
