Poseidon Diving Centre is the most established diving operation in the Trincomalee region, having been a fixture of the local diving community since 1973. Located at the 09th Mile post in Nilaveli, the centre serves as a gateway to some of Sri Lanka's most significant underwater landmarks.

As a PADI 5 Star IDC centre, the facility is built on decades of local expertise. Whether you are looking to complete your first certification or are seeking technical dives on significant wrecks, the centre's long-standing presence in the area ensures a deep understanding of the local marine environment and seasonal conditions.

The team is comprised of certified professionals, including instructors specialised in technical diving, wreck penetration, and marine biology. This expertise allows for a high standard of instruction across a wide variety of disciplines, from recreational reef diving to more advanced underwater exploration.

All instruction and dive guiding is conducted in English. The centre maintains a strong focus on safety, equipped with emergency oxygen on board and a long-standing record of professional conduct.

The reefs around Trincomalee are home to a diverse array of tropical fish and larger pelagics. You will regularly encounter reef sharks, rays (Batoidea), and various species of snapper (Lutjanidae) patrolling the coral structures. Schools of colourful reef fish, including angelfish (Pomacanthidae), parrotfish, and moorish idol (Zanclus cornutus), add constant movement to the seascape.

On the sandy bottoms and near the reef edges, look for Southern stingray (Hypanus americanus), blue spotted stingrays, and various species of eel (Anguilliformes), including giant moray eels. You may also spot barracuda (Sphyraena) and large groupers (Epinephelinae) amongst the rocks.

For those with an eye for macro life, the area offers plenty of interest. You can find nudibranch (Chromodoris willani), octopus (Octopoda), lionfish (Pterois volitans), and porcupinefish (Diodon) tucked into the reef.

Between April and October, the region becomes a destination for larger marine life, specifically whales passing through the area.

The best conditions for diving in this region are found between April and October, when the sea remains calm along the east coast. During this window, visibility is typically excellent, ranging between 20 and 30 metres.
