Valsabbion is a small, design-led boutique hotel in Pula, with 11 individual units and a distinctly modern feel rather than the scale and routine of a large resort. Built in 2014 and renovated in 2015, it suits you if you prefer polished architecture, a short walk to the water and a hotel that keeps the evening fairly straightforward: eat, swim, have a drink, then stop moving.

The atmosphere is particularly well suited to couples. You have the sea close by, a pool with sea views and a spa on site, while the historic centre of Pula remains within easy reach when you fancy Roman stonework instead of another hour in a sun lounger. There is also a practical streak beneath the styling: air conditioning, soundproof rooms, a minibar and room service all matter rather more when you return tired, salty and hungry than another carefully placed cushion ever will.

The hotel is also used as a base for a wider Istrian stay. Valsabbion manages city accommodation in historic Pula, including apartments near the Roman Amphitheatre, while the main hotel remains in Pješčana Uvala. That gives you a choice between a seaside stay and a more urban address, subject to the accommodation you select.

The nearest restaurants and bars are within a three-minute walk. Villa Margerita is about 350 metres away on foot, while Lanterna Restoran 293 is about 300 metres away; useful figures when you have spent the day underwater and are deciding whether shoes are really necessary. Other beaches include Saccorgiana Beach, about 0.6 miles away, and Ambrela Beach, about 0.7 miles away.

Pula’s centre is about 2 miles away, with Pula Forum, the Small Roman Theatre, Pula Castle Kastel and Pula Arena among the sights in the historic core. The Archaeological Museum of Istria is about 2.2 miles away. For a change of scenery, Brijuni National Park is about 6 miles from the hotel.

The room choice is more about the view and the amount of space you want around you than about working through a catalogue of nearly identical categories. A standard double or twin room keeps things simple for a couple, while the Deluxe Suite with Sea View is the obvious pick when the view deserves to be part of the booking rather than something you hope to discover behind the curtains.

V_MYTHOS SPA covers the more deliberate approach to feeling human again, with massages and facial treatments alongside wider body and beauty treatments. The spa also offers medical treatments, so it is not limited to the usual scented-oil routine.

Away from the coast, Valsabbion offers cultural excursions and truffle hunting. That gives you a few useful choices for a non-diving day, from gentle movement to an outing with rather more purpose.

Pula Airport is about 4.5 miles away, with an airport shuttle available through the hotel. A shuttle service, car hire and bicycle rental make the surrounding coast easier to explore, while private parking is available on site and includes an electric-vehicle charging station. Check-in runs from 15:00 to 23:00. Check-out is from 07:30 to 11:00, which gives you a workable morning if your onward journey starts at a sensible hour rather than before breakfast has had a chance to happen. There is no age requirement for check-in, and children of all ages are welcome.

Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel. Cash is not accepted, so plan to pay by card. The building has a lift to the upper floors, non-smoking rooms and air conditioning. Pets are welcome, and the hotel can arrange laundry, dry cleaning and ironing services when your kit for the next day needs more attention than a chair and good intentions can provide.
