TUI Magic Life Candia Maris is an adults-only resort for guests aged 16 and over, built around the straightforward pleasures of a beach, pools, food and a long list of things to do. Couples can settle into a quieter corner, while solo travellers and groups of friends have plenty of organised activity around them. It is an all-inclusive club, so the basic rhythm is simple: swim, eat, find a lounger, and decide whether the evening deserves shoes or just another drink.

The resort sits directly beside the long sandy public beach at Amoudara Herakliou, on the western side of Heraklion. The hotel section of the beach has sun loungers and parasols, reached by short paths through the pool and garden areas. The beach slopes gently, although its open position means the sea can become noticeably rougher when the wind gets involved.

Amoudara is about 0.1 mile away, while Heraklion city centre is roughly 3.7 miles from the resort. A bus stop is directly outside the club, which is useful when you fancy Venetian walls, the Morosini Fountain or the Archaeological Museum without turning the whole afternoon into a taxi exercise. The Palace of Knossos is about 5 miles away, and Kritiko Spiti is the closest named restaurant at around 0.5 mile on foot.

The room choice is mainly about how much space and outlook you want once the holiday has stopped being theoretical. The Classic Double Room keeps things simple for two, while the Superior Double Room with Side Sea View gives you the extra-wide bed and a glimpse towards the water. If three people are sharing, the Premium Garden View and sea-view double rooms make more practical sense than trying to conduct a luggage experiment in the smallest category.

For couples who want the room to do more of the evening's work, the sea-view suites offer separate suite-style space, while the Deluxe Suite with Private Pool and Sea View adds its own pool. At the other end of the scale, the Presidential Suite is the clear choice when two bathrooms and generous living space matter more than keeping the booking modest. Some rooms have access to a shared pool and terrace, which is handy for a quick dip without joining the main pool scene.

Every room is air-conditioned and has a minibar, safe, flat-screen satellite television, wardrobe space and a kettle. Mineral water is placed in the room on arrival, and the minibar also starts with non-alcoholic drinks. Wunderbar is open around the clock and includes a coffee house; the Pool Bar and Beach Bar keep drinks close to the water, while the Party Bar and Disco Bar cover the livelier end of the programme. Snacks, sandwiches, ice cream and cakes are available between meals, and self-service water stations sit in the sports areas. The Beach Bar is self-service, which is exactly the level of ceremony required when you are wearing swimwear and carrying a towel.

Four pools give you several ways to spend a non-diving afternoon: the Main Pool, Activity Pool, adults-only Relax Pool and an indoor pool. The indoor pool can be heated in April, May and October, while the outdoor pools are not heated. Sun loungers, parasols and pool or beach towels are available, and the beach is immediately beside the grounds when chlorinated water has had its turn.

The AEGEO spa offers massages, facial treatments, body treatments, mud baths, a hammam, steam facilities, sauna and thalassotherapy baths. There is also a spa relaxation area, a couples massage option and beauty treatments. The sauna is in the indoor pool area, while the wider spa and wellness services are paid services, so check what you want before turning up with a robe and unrealistic assumptions.

The fitness programme is substantial rather than decorative. The fitness centre runs from 7.00 to 22.00, with professional support, yoga, Pilates, meditation, indoor cycling and a broad daily class programme including stretching, mobility, aqua sessions and interval training. On dry land, you can use the tennis courts, padel tennis, football, archery, cycling, beach tennis, boccia, darts, table tennis and the games room. Evenings bring themed events, international shows, live music, beach evenings, a night lounge and regular disco sessions.

Heraklion International Airport is about 6.8 miles away, and the transfer to the resort takes around 20 minutes. An airport transfer can be arranged on request. Depending on the booking route, a TUI Deutschland package may include a shared TUI transfer, while other package and hotel-only arrangements treat the transfer separately, so check the transport details attached to your booking rather than assuming the coach is part of the deal.

Check-in runs from 15.00 to 23.30 and check-out is by 12.00. The front desk is open around the clock, with luggage storage, lockers, a tour desk and car hire available through the club. Early check-in is possible on request, and late check-out can be arranged as a paid service. Free private parking is available on site, with electric vehicle charging points; the separate resort information also lists parking as subject to availability.

The club has a minimarket, Market, Juwelier, Boutique, Foto Shop and Mini Supermarkt, which can save a trip into town for the forgotten essentials. Laundry is available as a paid service, medical assistance can be requested, and the resort has three meeting rooms. The site is generally adapted for guests with reduced mobility, including pool access via lifts and alternative routes, but the route to the beach includes sand and a less even alternative access, so wheelchair users may need assistance there.

The club's environmental work is built into the daily mechanics rather than left as a slogan. Energy comes from solar, wind, photovoltaic and biomass sources, while energy-saving switches are used in the rooms and 80% of the lighting is LED. Electric vehicle charging points are available on site.

Water-saving toilets, treated wastewater for irrigation and towel-reuse measures address the less glamorous but more useful side of resort management. Single-use plastic toiletries have been replaced by dispensers, and food-waste management sits alongside vegetarian and vegan cooking, a herb garden or greenhouse, and regular sustainability training for staff. The resort also supports local charities, provides cycle parking and produces an annual sustainability report.
