Grand Hotel Kalamata

Adults only, by the seafront and built around the sort of comforts that matter once your kit is back in the bag: air conditioning, room service, a restaurant, a bar and a sun terrace. Grand Hotel Kalamata is a polished base for a diving break when you want the sea nearby but do not want to spend the evening in a remote resort with nowhere else to go.

You will be understood in English, and the hotel team also speaks French and German. That is useful for everything from arranging a transfer or a table to explaining precisely how you would like your breakfast after an early start. The atmosphere is geared towards adults, with a shared lounge, a lobby bar and enough on-site service to keep the post-dive routine pleasantly uncomplicated.

You are in Kalamata, Greece, on the seafront and close to the city centre. The hotel has direct access to a private 200-metre golden-sand beach with loungers, parasols and a beach bar, while Kalamata Beach is about half a mile away. The Municipal Railway Park is roughly half a mile from the hotel, giving you an easy change of scenery when you have had enough of looking at the sea.

Kalamata’s cultural side is within reach rather than requiring a full expedition. The Pantazopoulio Cultural Centre is about 1 mile away, and the Benakeion Archaeological Museum, Military Museum and Kalamata Castle are each around 1.5 miles away. The nearest airport, Kalamata International, is about 6 miles away by road, with the journey taking around 12 minutes by car.

For two people, the choice is mainly about how much breathing space and how much sea you want. The Standard Double keeps things straightforward with a king-size bed and a city view, while the Deluxe Double with Sea View gives the room a different morning altogether. The Junior Suites add space for sitting back properly, with sea-view and side-sea-view versions for those who would rather wake up to blue than to the urban side of Kalamata.

The Grand Suite Sea View is the one to look at when the room is part of the holiday rather than merely the place where you store your luggage. Travelling with a small group? The Two Bedroom Suite City View sleeps up to four and has two bathrooms, which is the detail that prevents four adults from forming an unplanned queue before breakfast. An accessible Junior Suite with Side Sea View has twin beds and an accessible bathroom.

Air conditioning, soundproofing, a private bathroom, a wardrobe, slippers, bathrobes and complimentary toiletries cover the practical side of the night. A coffee machine and kettle are handy when your body clock has not yet agreed with the local one, while the minibar gives you something cold without requiring a lift ride. Daily housekeeping, free WiFi and room service available around the clock keep the room useful well beyond bedtime.

The main table is 1889 Restaurant, an air-conditioned dining room working with Mediterranean cooking. Breakfast is a buffet and is included with the stay; lunch and dinner are also served there. The day runs from breakfast at 07:00 through lunch between 12:30 and 15:00, with dinner from 19:00 to 23:00. Smart-casual dress applies, so your dive kit’s most heroic T-shirt can take the evening off.

There is one bar, The Bar, set in the lobby and focused on cocktails and drinks. An on-site coffee house covers the shorter caffeine stops, and outdoor seating gives you somewhere to sit with a coffee or a glass rather than returning straight to the room. Breakfast can also come to your room, and 24-hour room service is available when the legs have voted against going downstairs.

The outdoor pool gives you a place to stretch out without having to organise another outing, with a sea view from the water. The hotel also has a sun terrace and outdoor furniture, while the private beach adds loungers, parasols and a beach bar for the afternoon when you want the simplest possible plan: swim, dry off, repeat.

Grand Spa is the more convincing option when your shoulders have had enough of carrying tanks. Its 300 square metres include massages, facial treatments, a sauna and a Jacuzzi. There is also a fully equipped fitness centre and yoga, although nobody will judge you for choosing the spa’s less athletic itinerary.

If sitting still becomes too ambitious, you can hire bicycles, join bike or walking tours, or book cultural excursions including Kalamata and Mystras. On the water, the hotel offers access to snorkelling, kayaking, paddleboarding and boat excursions, with equipment hire available. A concierge and tour desk can help turn the afternoon into something more organised than wandering around in flip-flops.

Kalamata International Airport is about 6 miles away by road. An airport shuttle is available, either privately or as a shared service, and should be arranged with the hotel. Car hire is also available, while free private parking is provided on site without requiring a reservation. WiFi is free throughout the hotel.

Check-in is set between 14:00 and 15:00 and runs until midnight; check-out falls between 11:00 and 12:00, so check the applicable time for your booking. The minimum age for check-in is 18, and children over 12 are welcome. Cots and extra beds are not available.
