Only 18 buré units make up the resort, so the place has a modest scale rather than the feel of a large hotel complex. The setting is tropical, but the useful details are firmly practical: air conditioning, ceiling fans, self-contained accommodation and a pool close to your door.

The resort suits couples who want beach access and somewhere to cook or sit outside, as well as families looking for more space and simple activities on site. The entire property is wheelchair accessible, with two burés built to current disability standards. You can also use the tour desk to arrange activities and day trips when the island has more to offer than another hour in the shade.

You are in Nelly Bay, Australia, on the eastern side of Magnetic Island. Nelly Bay Beach is about 350 metres away, while the resort itself puts the beach at 50 metres. Either way, the sea is close enough to shape the day rather than require planning. The resort has direct beach access, and the island bus stops at the property.

A supermarket and shops are about 150 metres away, with cafés and restaurants within walking distance. Thai Again is around 350 metres away, Restaurant le Paradis about 600 metres, and R&R Bar and Restaurant roughly 900 metres. The ferry terminal and harbour complex are about 1 kilometre away, a manageable walk if you are travelling light; otherwise, bus and taxi services connect the terminal with the resort.

Magnetic Island National Park is about 2 miles away, and the island's beaches give you plenty of reasons to leave the pool. Geoffrey Bay Beach is around 1 mile away, while the golf course is within a 5-minute drive. Townsville International Airport is reached via Townsville and the ferry connection to the island.

The accommodation is built around self-contained burés and studios rather than a conventional hotel-room routine. You get a kitchen with a stovetop, microwave, refrigerator, toaster, kettle and kitchenware, plus a dining area and seating area. That matters when you return hungry, sandy or simply unwilling to look for a restaurant. A private patio gives you somewhere to sit with a drink while the air conditioning does its work indoors.

For two, the Queen Bungalow keeps things straightforward with a king-size bed, while the Superior Bungalow offers the same 36-square-metre format for a slightly different take on the stay. If you are travelling as a small group, the family accommodation uses bunk beds alongside a king-size bed; the Twin Studio also works for up to three people with a single bed and a king-size bed. The Standard Twin Room has the same sleeping arrangement, but no bathroom, so check the room details carefully before booking. There are also accessible queen and twin options, with ground-floor units, wheelchair access, grab rails and a lowered bathroom sink available in the accessible accommodation.

Every room has split-system air conditioning, a ceiling fan, tiled flooring, a private patio and a flat-screen TV. Weekly servicing keeps the arrangement more apartment-like than hotel-like, while towels are changed every three days in the burés. A formal meal plan is not part of the stay, and breakfast is not included as a named service.

The large lagoon pool is the centre of the resort's non-diving life, with a spa section and a beach area built into the pool. Sun loungers, beach chairs and umbrellas let you claim a comfortable patch of shade, while the gardens add somewhere to wander when sitting still has stopped being relaxing. Pool toys are available too, although the main attraction is simply having water close by without returning to the sea.

You can play tennis on the full-sized court, with equipment available for free, or head to the games room for table tennis, darts and pool. Giant chess sits in the gardens, and a library, board games and children's indoor play facilities provide quieter alternatives. The spa offers treatments, while the tour desk can help arrange island activities and day trips. Hiking, wildlife observation, cycling, fishing, snorkelling, horse riding and canoeing are available on or away from the property, depending on the activity.

The gardens bring the island's wildlife into the background of the stay, with birds, curlews, possums and the occasional koala. For a couple, the easiest evening may be the least organised one: swim, sit on the patio, cook something simple and let the island carry on without you.

Your journey starts at Townsville. From Townsville Airport, take a taxi to the Breakwater Terminal or arrange a shuttle bus, then take the passenger ferry to Magnetic Island; the crossing takes 20 minutes. A separate vehicle and passenger ferry takes 50 minutes. From Nelly Bay Ferry Terminal, the island bus meets the ferry and stops at Island Leisure Resort, or you can walk about 1 kilometre along Sooning Street before turning into Kelly Street. Car hire is available, and free private parking is provided on site.

Check-in runs from 14:00 to 22:00 and check-out from 06:00 to 10:00. You need to give the resort your expected arrival time, particularly if your ferry arrives outside the obvious part of the day. Luggage storage, concierge service, express check-in and check-out, and a tour desk are available. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property, including the public areas, and room service is available.

Children over five are welcome, with no cots or extra beds available. Check-in is for adults aged 18 to 99, pets are not allowed, and quiet hours run from 22:00 to 07:00.
