Quest Rockingham is an aparthotel for divers who prefer a useful base to a decorative one. You get a self-contained apartment, air conditioning, free WiFi and the freedom to sort out dinner without negotiating another restaurant menu when you are tired, salty and hungry.

The property has 96 studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments, so it works for a couple, a small family or a group that would rather spread out than share one hotel room. The overall idea is straightforward: stay near the coast, keep your routine, and use Rockingham as a base for the wider Western Australian shoreline.

There is a swimming pool, a fitness room, daily housekeeping on most days, concierge service and luggage storage. It is not pretending to be a resort with endless distractions. That is rather the point: you can swim, eat, sleep, and get on with the day.

You are in Rockingham, Australia, at 22 Flinders Lane, close to the waterfront. Rockingham Beach is about 200 metres away on foot, while Cape Peron Beach is roughly 3 miles away by car. Warnbro Beach is about 5 miles away, giving you several stretches of coast to explore rather than one postcard-sized strip.

The practical part is on the doorstep. Spices on Ocean is about 100 metres away, Thai by the Sea and Tutti Frutti are around 250 metres away, and Beach Bay Char & Grill is roughly 350 metres from the property. Phoebe Hymus Park is about 1 km away, with Lake Richmond around 2 miles away and Rockingham Wild Encounters about 3.5 miles away.

Rockingham railway station is roughly 2 miles away by road. Perth Airport is about 33 miles away by road, so this is a coastal base rather than an airport hotel. You are close to the sea and local places to eat, with the airport journey best treated as part of the arrival plan.

The useful distinction here is not a long list of room labels but how much living space you want around your dive kit, luggage and post-dive appetite. The Studio Apartment suits a couple keeping things compact. Move up to the One-Bedroom Apartment when you want a separate bedroom, more room to sit down properly, and a balcony and laundry facilities. The Two-Bedroom Apartment gives a group more elbow room and two bathrooms, which can be worth its weight in gold when several people are trying to leave at the same time.

Every apartment has a kitchen with a refrigerator, microwave, stovetop, cooking utensils, kettle, toaster and coffee machine. The one- and two-bedroom apartments add a dishwasher and in-room laundry facilities. There is a dining table, so breakfast does not have to be eaten standing up over the sink, and grocery delivery lets you stock the refrigerator without turning the evening into an expedition.

Air conditioning will help when the Western Australian day has left you overheated, while heating is available for cooler nights. Bathrooms have a shower or bath, towels, toiletries and a hairdryer. The apartments are non-smoking, and daily housekeeping keeps things in order except on Sundays and public holidays. An accessible one-bedroom apartment is available, with lift access and accessibility features for independent wheelchair users and guests with reduced mobility.

There is no need to turn dinner into a complicated operation. The surrounding dining options include Latitude 32 for steaks, slow-roasted prime rib, seafood, salads, desserts and wine, with lunch and dinner served throughout the week. The Cray Seafood and Grill focuses on seafood and serves lunch and dinner from Tuesday to Sunday.

Rustico Tapas & Wine Bar brings a more informal beachside evening, with tapas in a cosy setting from Wednesday to Sunday. For an early start, Chandlers Kitchen serves breakfast and brunch from 8am to 2pm, while Ostro Eatery covers breakfast and lunch from 6.30am to 3pm with wholesome dishes, coffee, smoothies, juices and classic cocktails. Both offer a room-key discount on meals.

Dome Cafe runs from 6am to 8pm every day, with breakfast, lunch and dinner options, including early coffee and the slightly rebellious idea of breakfast for dinner. A continental breakfast is available to purchase. Back at the apartment, the kitchen, refrigerator and dining table give you the option of keeping things simple, which is often exactly what a diver wants.

The pool is on the ground floor in a covered, partly enclosed space. It remains outdoors in character, while the roof and enclosure offer protection from the elements and let in natural light. The water is heated to approximately 26–27°C depending on the season, and access runs from 7am to 11pm.

There is no lifeguard on duty, so you use the pool at your own risk and children must be supervised. That caveat is worth remembering when your legs are tired and your judgement has been softened by a long day in the water. For something more purposeful, the complimentary guest fitness room is on the ground floor and is accessible around the clock, subject to reception arrangements on public holidays.

Golf is available within about 2 miles of the property. Rockingham Wild Encounters is roughly 3.5 miles away, while Lake Richmond is around 2 miles away. If the day calls for less organisation, the sun terrace, outdoor furniture and barbecue facilities let you stay close to the property and do very little, which is a perfectly respectable holiday activity.

Check-in runs from 2pm to 8pm and check-out from 8am to 10am. You need photo identification and a credit card at check-in, and the property needs your arrival time in advance. The minimum check-in age is 18. Cash, Visa and Mastercard are accepted.
