The Local Hotel

The Local Hotel puts you in South Fremantle, with eight rooms above a restaurant and several bars. It suits you if you want a compact hotel with food, drinks and the coast within walking distance, rather than a large resort built around facilities you may never use.

The building dates from 1897, which gives the place a proper Fremantle address rather than a freshly minted holiday label. You can return from the beach, settle in with air conditioning or a fan, and keep the evening simple: dinner, a drink, then bed. No complicated choreography required.

Fremantle South Beach is about a 5- to 8-minute walk away, depending on the route, while Bathers Beach is around 1 mile away. The local coastline is therefore part of the daily plan, not a brochure promise requiring a taxi.

Fremantle railway station is about 1.1 miles away on foot. Fremantle Prison is around 1 mile away, and the Shipwreck Galleries and Fremantle Roundhouse are also within walking distance. For food and coffee beyond the hotel, Ruocco's Pizzeria E Ristorante is about 300 feet away, with other restaurants and cafés close by.

All the rooms are arranged for two people, with a king-size bed. The Queen Room is the more compact couple's option; the larger Double Rooms give you a little more breathing space around the bed and your bags. This is a sensible choice for a short diving stay or a beach-based break, provided you are comfortable using a shared bathroom.

Air conditioning matters when you come back warm, salty and ready to stop moving. A fan and heating add flexibility, while the refrigerator is useful for keeping water cold and the tea and coffee facilities handle the first drink of the day without a café expedition. Bathrobes, slippers, towels, parquet floors, a desk and a television keep the rooms practical rather than overdecorated.

Free WiFi is available throughout the property, and daily housekeeping keeps the room in order while you are out. Upper floors are reached by stairs only, so keep that in mind when deciding how much luggage deserves to come along.

The Local Restaurant serves lunch and dinner, with Australian cooking and vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free choices. Lunch and dinner run from 11am to 9pm from Sunday to Thursday, and until 9.30pm on Fridays and Saturdays. That gives you a proper meal after a full day out, rather than leaving you to negotiate crisps and minibar archaeology.

There is one restaurant, an outdoor terrace and three separate places for a drink: The Front Bar, The Whiskey Bar and The Local Garage. The bar areas provide an easy landing point before or after dinner, while the on-site coffee house and in-room tea and coffee makers cover the less ambitious moments. The restaurant is family-friendly, with children's meals available.

Fremantle South Beach is close enough for an uncomplicated walk, a swim or a few quiet hours by the water. If you prefer something with walls and a story, Fremantle Prison, the Shipwreck Galleries and the Fremantle Roundhouse give you several ways to spend an afternoon without turning it into a major expedition.

The Western Australian Maritime Museum is around 1.4 miles away on foot, while Davis Park is about 1.3 miles away. You can also make a longer outing to Kings Park, around 8 miles away.
