Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort sits among 40 acres of palm trees and tropical gardens, with thatched bungalows, a beachfront setting and enough on site to keep the evening from becoming a logistical exercise.

The tone suits couples, families and divers who want a proper base for the non-diving part of the trip. You can finish the day with a drink by the beach, a meal in one of several restaurants or a treatment at Bebe Spa. There is also room for a little Fijian culture, with kava ceremonies and a traditional fire-walking show.

You are in Korotogo, on Viti Levu, directly beside the sea. The resort has direct access to a white-sand beach, with sun loungers and parasols already part of the picture. That makes the coastline an easy place to drift towards when the day’s plans have run out of steam.

Kula WILD Adventure Park is a seven-minute walk away. Cuvu Beach is a 23-minute drive, while Sigatoka Sand Dunes National Park is about 7 miles away and Lawaqa Park about 4 miles away by road. Cafe Planet Fiji is roughly 1 mile away on foot, but with seven restaurants and several bars on site, you may not feel the urge to go hunting for dinner.

Nadi International Airport is 28 miles away, with a driving time of about 1 hour 5 minutes. The resort is off the Queens Highway, in the Korotogo area.

The choice is mainly about how much of the resort you want to see from your room. Plantation-facing accommodation keeps you among the gardens, while ocean-facing and beachfront options put the Pacific into the daily view. If you are travelling as a couple and want more room to spread out, the one-bedroom suites give you a separate living area; families can look towards the larger apartment or rooms arranged with a super-king bed and sofa bed, or two double beds.

Air conditioning matters in Fiji, particularly when you return warm, salty and ready to stop pretending that a thin hotel brochure is a suitable fan. Rooms also have a refrigerator, coffee machine, seating area, wardrobe, private bathroom and a television with cable and satellite channels. Baravi serves lunch and dinner with dishes influenced by India, Thailand, Singapore and China. For something more formal, Ivi offers Pacific Continental fine dining beside a 100-year-old ivi tree, while Kana Buffet Restaurant brings local food, seafood and traditional Fijian feasting into the mix.

Drinks have their own geography. Kalo Kalo Bar sits high above the resort with Pacific Ocean views, cocktails, tapas, oysters and champagne at sunset. The Reef Cocktail & Lounge Bar adds tapas, cocktails and live music, becoming adults-only after 21:00. Vahavu Bistro works beside the pool with breakfast, tapas and a swim-up bar, while Takia On The Go handles sandwiches, focaccia, pastries and coffee. Twenty-four-hour room service is available when the sensible plan is to eat in a robe.

The outdoor swimming pool is the obvious place to spend a non-diving afternoon, with a swim-up bar close at hand. The white-sand beach adds loungers and parasols, so you can choose between a proper swim and the more advanced discipline of remaining horizontal while looking at the sea.

Bebe Spa Fiji is set above the resort on Vakalomalagi Hill, known locally as Heavenly Hill. Its treatment menu covers massages, facials, hammam, sauna, Jacuzzi, mud baths and body wraps, with seven treatment rooms and private open-air balconies overlooking the ocean.
