The Remote Resort

The Remote Resort is a boutique resort for ocean-lovers and couples who would rather trade traffic and crowds for a private peninsula on Vanua Levu. Just eight villas share the property, so the mood is intimate without requiring you to whisper over dinner.

Your day can move from sea to villa to beach without much ceremony. Each villa has an ocean view, a private plunge pool and an outdoor deck with a day bed; the beach is private, and kayaks, paddleboards and snorkelling are part of the all-inclusive stay. Children over 12 are welcome, making this suitable for adults and older families rather than young-family logistics.

The resort is in Nawi, Fiji, on Vanua Levu, opposite Taveuni Island and beside the Somosomo Strait. It occupies a private 64-acre peninsula with direct access to the sea, a white-sand beach, jungle and reef all within the property.

There is no road arrival at the final stage: access is by boat. From Taveuni, the transfer takes 20 minutes by boat; from Savusavu, you travel by car for 1 hour, partly on an unsealed road, followed by the same 20-minute boat journey. This is properly remote, not merely a hotel that has used the word in its name.

The accommodation is built around privacy rather than corridors and numbered doors. For two, a villa with its own plunge pool and ocean outlook gives you a private place to cool off and a deck where you can stretch out with a book, a drink or whatever remains of your energy. The Deluxe Villa offers more room for a couple who like space around them; it is the one to consider when the villa itself matters as much as the bed.

Travelling as a small group changes the calculation. The Two-Bedroom Villa keeps the private-pool format while giving everyone a little more breathing room, while the Two-Bedroom Bungalow is the largest option for a family or group that wants shared space rather than separate hideaways. The room cards cover the dimensions and occupancy; the practical difference is whether you want a compact couple's base or somewhere that can absorb several people and their luggage without a daily game of Tetris.

Handcrafted wooden furniture, a king-size bed, Egyptian cotton towels, air conditioning and a fan cover the basics after salt, sun and a long day outdoors. There is a fridge, an electric kettle, tea and coffee facilities, a seating area and a private bathroom with shower, bathrobes and toiletries. A private entrance, balcony or terrace and daily housekeeping keep the arrangement pleasantly self-contained, while room service and breakfast in the room allow you to take the morning slowly.

The all-inclusive format is built around à la carte meals rather than a buffet march-past. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served at the open-air Main Pavilion restaurant, but the setting can change: your meal may be arranged on the villa deck, by the beach, on the oceanfront deck or as a picnic. Private dining is a speciality here, which is useful when the evening calls for your own table and no timetable beyond the next course.

The cooking is Fijian-inspired, fresh and locally driven, with dishes such as kokoda and local salads. The kitchen works across vegetarian, vegan, pescatarian, gluten-free, dairy-free and low-carb preferences, alongside halal and American breakfast choices. It is worth sharing dietary requirements before arrival, particularly in a remote resort where the kitchen is planning rather than improvising.

There is one named bar, the Main Pavilion bar. In your villa, a minibar, fridge and tea and coffee-making facilities cover the quieter end of the evening, while packed lunches and picnics make sense for days spent away from the main pavilion. Room service is also available, so a late return need not automatically mean a formal dinner.

The private beach is the obvious starting point, with white sand, sun loungers and a hammock. Kayaking, paddleboarding, snorkelling and other on-site water activities give you something to do when you want movement without committing to another full expedition; fishing and boat excursions are also available. Hiking, village visits and cultural excursions take the day inland, with options including the Lavena Coastal Walk, Buca Waterfall Hike and a visit to Vunikura village.

For a more useful sort of recovery, The Remote Spa Deck sits above the ocean among the trees. Treatments include massage, facials, body scrubs and body wraps using Pure Fiji products, with the sound of the water doing some of the work before the treatment begins. Spa appointments run from 7am to 6pm, with the last treatment starting at 5pm.

There is also a cooking class, local-culture activity and Chef's cooking demonstration, plus volleyball for anyone who still has competitive instincts left. Friday brings the Coconut and Pina Colada Show, while Kava Time adds Fijian songs and ceremony to the evening. For a quieter plan, the private pool, deck and day bed are already a complete itinerary.

The resort arranges return transfers from either Taveuni or Savusavu, with boat-only access to the property. From Nadi International Airport, the straightforward route is a domestic flight to Taveuni, taking 1 hour and 20 minutes, followed by the boat transfer. Give the resort your arrival time in advance so the connection can be organised around your flight.

Check-in starts from 14:00 and check-out is by 10:00. Private and express check-in and check-out, luggage storage, concierge assistance and a wake-up service are available. A photo identification and credit card are required at check-in, and the minimum check-in age is 18.

WiFi is free throughout the resort, and air conditioning, a fan, a safe in the villa and daily housekeeping keep the practical side under control. Upper floors are reached by stairs only. The resort accepts cash, pets are not allowed, and children under 12 cannot stay; extra beds are available on request for guests aged 12 and over.
