Tatahi Lodge Beach Resort

Tatahi Lodge is a small ten-unit lodge in Hahei, set among subtropical gardens, lawns and native bush. Six New Zealand kauri trees give the grounds a strong sense of place, while garden views, outdoor seating and the sound of native birds keep the setting firmly on the relaxed side of the scale.

You are in Hahei, New Zealand, on the Coromandel Peninsula, with the lodge reached via Grange Road. Hahei Beach is about a quarter of a mile away, or roughly four minutes on foot. It is a pink- to golden-sand beach, and the route to Cathedral Cove begins from the beach area before climbing towards the car park.

The village is close enough to be useful rather than merely decorative: cafés, restaurants and everyday amenities are about a minute's walk away. Cathedral Cove is around 1 km from the lodge, while Hot Water Beach is about 2.4 miles away. The Coromandel's volcanic coastline, native bush and coastal walks provide the wider backdrop, without putting you in the middle of a town.

The choice is mainly about how much living space and kitchen room you want. A studio makes sense for two people travelling light, with a super-king bed and the compact layout that keeps the evening simple. For a couple who prefer more elbow room, the larger accommodation gives you a proper dining area and seating space rather than leaving the day's kit to colonise the bed.

The Two-Bedroom Cottage is the practical pick for a group or family wanting more room to live together, while the Two-Bedroom Apartment gives a similar family-friendly arrangement in a more compact format. The cottage and apartment options include kitchen facilities, a refrigerator, microwave, toaster, kettle, kitchenware and a dining table, so you can make breakfast or assemble something cold without turning the holiday into a culinary expedition.

Natural timber interiors, garden views and outdoor furniture give the rooms a clear connection with the grounds. Air conditioning, heating, a fan and electric blankets cover the less predictable side of New Zealand weather; the refrigerator is useful for keeping drinks cold, and the flat-screen television includes cable channels and streaming services such as Netflix, Disney Plus and YouTube Premium. WiFi is available throughout the lodge. Bathrooms are private and include a shower or bath, towels, toiletries and a hairdryer.

This is a room-only stay, so breakfast is not built into the lodge routine. Your accommodation gives you the tools for a quiet start instead: a kettle, toaster, refrigerator, microwave and dining area. Tea and coffee-making facilities are provided, and a shared kitchen is also available.

For an evening meal, Hahei village is about a minute away on foot, with cafés and restaurants close at hand. Hahei Beach Café is roughly 350 metres away, while The Icecream Shop is about 250 metres away for the sort of post-dive decision that requires very little planning. Purangi Winery Pizzeria is around 2.6 miles away if you want to make dinner part of a short drive.

The outdoor dining area, patio and BBQ facilities let you keep things informal and eat in the gardens. Beach chairs, umbrellas and beach towels are available too, which is handy when the plan is less “formal dinner” and more “something edible, then sit outside until the light goes”.

The grounds are made for a slow afternoon rather than a timetable. You can sit outside among the gardens, take a bicycle when available, or use the badminton equipment and tennis gear. A tennis court is available off site. Board games and a shared lounge with television cover the occasional change of weather.

The coast supplies the more energetic options. Kayaking, snorkelling and boat excursions are available through local operators, while the nearby Hahei Marine Reserve gives you another way to spend time on the water. Cathedral Cove, Hot Water Beach and the surrounding volcanic coastline all work well as half-day outings, particularly if one person in your party wants land-based plans while another is thinking about the sea.

Cycling, golf, walking trails and cultural excursions add variety without requiring a heroic level of enthusiasm. At Hot Water Beach, the lodge provides spades for digging a spa pool, turning the beach into a rather literal warm-up act. Families are welcome, and local advice is available on reaching Cathedral Cove when younger children or limited mobility make the usual route less suitable.

Check-in runs from 14:00 to 18:30, and you should tell the lodge your expected arrival time in advance. Check-out is from 08:00 to 10:00. An early check-in at 14:00 is available, which gives you a little more time to settle into Hahei rather than losing the first afternoon to logistics.

Free private parking is available on site, with no reservation possible. WiFi is available throughout the lodge, daily housekeeping is provided, and laundry facilities are available for guests. Private check-in and check-out keep the arrival process direct, while concierge assistance can help with local plans. English is the working language of the hotel team.

Children of all ages are welcome. Cots and extra beds can be requested, depending on the accommodation selected, and the lodge is family-friendly.
