Set among 1.5 acres of subtropical gardens, The Church Hahei Accommodation is a 12-cottage guesthouse for divers who want the Coromandel within reach without turning every evening into a logistical exercise. You get your own outdoor space, garden views and a private entrance, with Hahei Village close enough for a short walk when you need supplies or simply want to stretch your legs.

The character comes from the buildings themselves: high timber ceilings, polished wooden floors, leadlight windows and restored timber furniture. It is more guesthouse than standard resort, with a shared lounge, books, DVDs, SKY TV and board games for the hours when the legs have had enough of both fins and sightseeing. The English-speaking team can also help arrange local activities.

You are at the edge of Hahei Village, on Hahei Beach Road, in Hahei, New Zealand. Hahei Beach is within walking distance, roughly ten minutes on foot, and the village is about five minutes away. That puts cafés and local restaurants within practical reach, while the property itself sits among gardens rather than directly on the sand.

Hahei Beach brings white sand, sheltered swimming and pohutukawa trees, with small offshore islands helping to calm the water. Cathedral Cove Beach is about 1.2 miles away by car, while Hot Water Beach is about 3.7 miles away by car. Cooks Beach is around 6.6 miles away, and the Whitianga Passenger Ferry Terminal is a ten-minute drive from the property.

The accommodation works best when you choose it around the way you travel. A garden studio suits a couple who want a straightforward base with a large bed, private patio and garden outlook. For a small group, a cottage gives you more room to spread out, while the cottages with kitchenettes make more sense when you prefer to keep a few meals simple rather than eat out every time you return hungry.

Families or friends travelling together have the three-bedroom house, which gives the group a proper shared base rather than several separate rooms. The kitchen-equipped accommodation includes a microwave, refrigerator, toaster, kettle and kitchenware; useful kit when breakfast needs to happen at your pace or dinner is better assembled than hunted down.

Rooms are heated and include a private bathroom with shower, towels, toiletries and a hairdryer. A seating area and desk give you somewhere to deal with the practical business of the day, while the patio, balcony or terrace provides outdoor seating and garden views. WiFi is free throughout the property, although coverage varies between rooms.

The Church Bistro occupies the reconstructed church building that gives the property its name. It serves European-inspired evening meals from a seasonal menu, with changing blackboard specials rather than the same fixed dinner appearing night after night.

The wine list is extensive and carefully selected, which is the sort of detail that matters when the day’s main achievement was getting back into dry clothes. The bistro is independent and seasonal, and reservations are strongly recommended. Its opening pattern changes with the season, so plan around the actual dates of your stay rather than assuming dinner is available every evening.

Breakfast is continental and can be served in your room. The accommodation is sold on a room-only basis, and barbecue facilities, outdoor dining furniture and a picnic area give you another way to handle supper when the bistro is not part of the plan.

Hahei Beach is the obvious low-effort option: walk down to the white sand, swim in the sheltered water or take a kayak out along the coast. Beach towels are provided, and spades are available for Hot Water Beach, where the tide and timing do rather more of the work than you do.

The tour desk and concierge can arrange local activities including kayaking, scenic boat trips, diving and walks. The Cathedral Cove coastal route, bush walks and boat access to the reserve give you ways to spend a non-diving day without manufacturing entertainment indoors.

Back at the property, the shared lounge supplies books, DVDs, SKY TV and board games, while the gardens, sun terrace and outdoor seating give you somewhere to sit with a drink or a book. There is also a guest barbecue, because not every evening needs a restaurant, a timetable or a heroic amount of effort.

Free private parking is available on site, with no reservation needed, and luggage storage is available for awkward gaps around arrival or departure. Daily housekeeping is included, while laundry is available as a separate service. The property also has facilities for disabled guests, including ground-floor units.

Check-in runs from 13:00 and check-out is by 10:00. Children of any age are welcome, with cots and extra beds available on request and subject to the accommodation selected. Pets are not allowed. Payment is accepted in cash, and American Express is not accepted.
