Coral Garden, Milne Bay: A Shallow Hard Coral Reef

Coral Garden, located on the northern coast of Milne Bay, lives up to its name with an expansive underwater landscape dominated by a diverse collection of hard corals. Typically a short boat ride from Tawali Dive Resort, the site immediately presents with clear waters, allowing the vibrant reef structures to be visible from the surface. This natural spectacle begins in the shallows, making it accessible for observation even before you begin your descent.

As you drop into Coral Garden, you enter an immersive world of intricate coral architecture. The hard corals here form sprawling gardens, creating a complex topography of ridges, plateaus, and valleys. You'll navigate through diverse colonies of stony corals, from robust, plate-like structures to delicate, branching staghorns, all thriving in the nutrient-rich waters characteristic of this part of Papua New Guinea.

The shallow depths at Coral Garden, ranging from 3 to 18 metres, allow ample sunlight to penetrate, illuminating the corals and enhancing their natural hues. This constant light interaction highlights the subtle changes in colour and form across the reef, revealing a constantly shifting panorama.
