Shaab Marsa Alam, also known as Shaab Alam, is a distinctive kidney-shaped coral reef located approximately four miles east of the fishing village of Marsa Alam, or just 25 minutes from Marsa Alam. This dynamic reef system is characterized by substantial hard coral formations, creating intricate structures that extend across the reef and provide shelter and sustenance for a myriad of reef inhabitants. The sheer scale and health of these corals, including thriving colonies of Porites and Acropora, define the initial impression of this site, inviting close inspection as divers navigate the shallows.
The topography of Shaab Alam lends itself to varied dive profiles, making it a popular choice for drift dives where you can effortlessly glide along the reef's contours. As you descend, the steep reef face immediately draws your attention, adorned with an impressive array of hard and soft corals. The western side of the reef features a sandy seabed interspersed with a series of ergs and scattered coral heads, offering a gentle introduction to the dive.
One of the standout features of Shaab Alam is a safari boat wreck, approximately four years old, which has become heavily encrusted with soft corals, transforming it into a vibrant habitat. Exploring this artificial reef brings a different dimension to the dive, with its structure providing shelter and foraging grounds for various marine inhabitants. Beyond the wreck, divers can explore numerous small caves and overhangs, and for those properly trained and equipped, mysterious cave systems offer an exciting challenge to venture into the reef's hidden depths.
Moving towards the northern section, the reef serves as a hunting ground for resident species such as trout and various species of grouper. Around this northern plateau, numerous moray eels can be observed peeking from crevices within the extensive coral formations. Keep an eye out for schooling yellow goatfish, often seen foraging along the sandy patches near the coral heads, and blacktail butterflyfish flitting amongst the corals.
Encounters with larger pelagics are always a possibility at Shaab Alam, adding an element of thrilling anticipation to your dive. In the open water sections, divers frequently encounter barracudas, often in shoals, and tuna slicing through the currents. Keep a keen eye out for the majestic Napoleon wrasse gracefully patrolling the reef, and turtles are also frequent visitors, often seen feeding on the corals or resting on ledges. The chance of spotting a reef shark cruising in the blue further elevates the experience, making every descent an adventure.
Beyond the immediate reef structure, one of the compelling draws of Shaab Marsa Alam is the frequent presence of dolphins. While not a guaranteed sighting, encounters here offer a truly special experience as these intelligent marine mammals traverse the open water adjacent to the reef. The intricate coral formations throughout the site create sheltered environments, showcasing the delicate balance of the ecosystem, sustained by nutrient-rich currents.
Shaab Marsa Alam is accessible to divers of all levels, offering both reef and wreck diving experiences down to a maximum depth of 30 metres. It can be enjoyed throughout the entire year, with the best time for better visibility and increased pelagic sightings aligning with the north-east monsoon from mid-December to mid-May. Water temperatures generally range from 28 to 30°C. The currents here are generally mild, making it an accessible dive for various experience levels, and it is particularly well-suited for night dives. Organized excursions to this site occur three times a week.
