Safaga Soraya, El Quseir: Red Sea's isolated reef

Safaga Soraya, or Serib Soraya, is a fringing reef located approximately 10 kilometres south of El Quseir. Its relative isolation and exposure to the elements mean it is not as frequently dived as other sites in the region. This reduced human impact has allowed the coral structures to flourish, creating a dense and diverse marine ecosystem that reflects the Red Sea's natural state.

The dive begins with an entry over a flat reef top, leading into shallow water at around 5 metres. From there, the reef slopes gradually down to a maximum depth of 20 metres. This gentle profile makes it suitable for a relaxed dive, allowing you to take your time exploring the extensive coral gardens without the pressure of deep or technical profiles.

As you descend, your attention will be drawn to the large reef blocks, particularly those found to the east of the site. These formations are rich in hard and soft corals, creating intricate habitats for a variety of reef fish. The sheer abundance and size of these corals are a testament to the site's preserved environment, offering a visual spectacle of vibrant colours and complex structures.

The health of the coral at Safaga Soraya directly supports a diverse fish population. While specific species are not detailed, the entire reef teems with both pelagic and benthic life. You will encounter numerous reef fish moving through the coral formations, alongside more discreet creatures that inhabit the crevices and overhangs, providing opportunities for both wide-angle and macro observation.

The site's topography, with its gradual slope and extensive reef blocks, creates varied micro-environments. This allows for different types of marine life to coexist, from schooling fish in the open water above the reef to smaller, more cryptic species nestled within the coral. The combination of easy access and a thriving ecosystem makes it a valuable site for observing the natural dynamics of a Red Sea reef.
