Seven Sisters, Aqaba: Reef Diving and the M42 Tank

Descending into Seven Sisters, you immediately encounter a series of distinct coral blocks, the 'sisters' that give the site its name. These formations rise from a sandy and grassy seabed, each draped in a variety of soft and hard corals. The natural architecture creates a series of swim-throughs and sheltered areas, inviting you to navigate between the pinnacles and observe the intricate reef ecosystem thriving within.

The topography here is gentle, beginning as a fringing reef that gradually slopes into deeper sections, though the main features remain relatively shallow. You'll find yourself hovering over varied coral landscapes, where the clear Red Sea waters allow for excellent visibility, often extending beyond 30 metres. This clarity, combined with the site's calm conditions, makes it an ideal location for focused observation and underwater photography.

Beyond the coral pinnacles, the site holds an additional point of interest: an M42 anti-aircraft tank, deliberately scuttled in 1999 to form an artificial reef. This small wreck is now well-integrated into the marine environment, providing shelter and a substrate for further coral growth. Exploring the tank offers a different perspective, contrasting the natural reef formations with a piece of human history now reclaimed by the sea.

Life at Seven Sisters is diverse, even in its shallow depths. As you explore the coral blocks and the tank, you'll commonly encounter fusiliers, Bigeye emperor, butterflyfish, and parrotfish moving across the reef. Lionfish are often seen, along with sergeant major and the endemic Red Sea clownfish. Keep an eye out for moray eels tucked into crevices and groupers patrolling the reef edges.

The site's shallow profile, with a maximum depth of 20 metres, allows for extended bottom times, giving you ample opportunity to observe the resident marine life. Sea turtles are occasional visitors, gliding gracefully over the seagrass beds adjacent to the reef. The combination of vibrant coral, the tank wreck, and the consistent presence of reef fish creates a dynamic and engaging dive experience.

Seven Sisters is known for its calm conditions, making it accessible and enjoyable for a wide range of divers. The absence of significant current allows for relaxed exploration, whether you're focusing on macro life within the corals or simply enjoying the panoramic views of the reef. Access to the site is straightforward, primarily via shore entry from South Beach, requiring only a short swim to reach the main reef formations. Boat access is also available through local dive centres, offering another convenient option.
