Aquarium, Mnemba Atoll: Drifting with Garden Eels in Zanzibar

Dropping into Aquarium, you'll immediately feel the gentle push of the current that defines this site. It’s a drift dive by design, letting you glide effortlessly over long, undulating strips of hard coral outcrops that emerge from the sandy seafloor. This topography creates a series of vibrant habitats, each section teeming with activity as the current brings nutrients and life to the reef. The light shifting through the water column plays across these ancient structures, highlighting the intricate details of the coral gardens.

As you move deeper, between 12 and 25 metres, the sheer density of reef fish becomes apparent. Parrotfish move in vibrant schools, grazing on the corals, while unicornfish and surgeonfish dart through the water column. You'll observe triggerfish navigating their territories and colourful Moorish idols adding splashes of yellow and black against the coral backdrop. Keep an eye out for groupers and giant trevallies, powerful predators that patrol the edges of the reef, ready to take advantage of the prevailing current.

One of the most striking features of Aquarium unfolds just off the main reef, where vast stretches of sand begin. Here, you'll witness hundreds of garden eels (Heterocongrinae) swaying rhythmically from their burrows, their bodies extended vertically as they filter feed from the water column. Above this living carpet, large numbers of crescent-tail fish (Priacanthus hamrur), identifiable by their distinctive large eyes, seem to drift in synchronicity, creating a truly unique and mesmerising spectacle that is central to the site's identity.

The way the current interacts with the reef and the surrounding sandy areas sculpts the experience at Aquarium. It’s not just a means of transport; it’s a force that dictates the behaviour of the marine life you'll encounter. The continuous flow allows for these extensive garden eel colonies to thrive and supports the diverse population of reef fish, from the smaller Moorish idols to the larger giant trevallies, making every pass over the coral and sand a dynamic encounter.
