Ocean Lovers Taganga

Ocean Lovers Taganga is a PADI 5 Star IDC centre situated in the coastal village of Taganga, just a short walk from the beach and a fifteen-minute drive from Santa Marta. The centre serves as a gateway to the marine protected areas of Tayrona National Park, where the Caribbean reefs offer a variety of topographies for exploration.

The centre is designed for divers who value structured instruction and small group sizes. Whether you are completing your first certification or working towards a professional level, the focus remains on safety, marine conservation, and high-quality training standards.

As an Instructor Development Centre, the facility is geared towards both recreational divers and those pursuing professional careers. The team is international and multilingual, capable of providing instruction and guidance in English, Spanish, German, French, Italian, and Dutch.

Safety is a core component of their operation, with a strict ratio of no more than four divers per guide. This ensures personalized attention during dives, which is particularly beneficial for students or those navigating more challenging sites. The centre also maintains full emergency protocols, including on-site oxygen and proximity to hyperbaric facilities in Santa Marta.

The centre offers a comprehensive range of PADI courses, starting with Discover Scuba Diving for those new to the water. For those beginning their journey, they provide the Open Water Diver, Advanced Open Water, and Rescue Diver courses, along with Emergency First Responder training.

For more experienced divers and professionals, the curriculum includes specialties such as Deep Diving, Drift Diving, Wreck Diving, Sidemount Diving, and Peak Performance Buoyancy. The centre also hosts the PADI Divemaster programme and the IDC for those training to become instructors. Environmental and technical skill sets are also covered through courses like Coral Reef Conservation, Dive Against Debris, and Fish Identification.

The centre operates its own dedicated dive boat for excursions into the national park. Typical morning trips depart at 8:30, visiting two different dive sites with bottom times of 45 to 60 minutes at each location.

On board, divers are provided with fresh fruit and water during the surface intervals between dives. The boat also supports night diving excursions, allowing for exploration of the reef under different light conditions.

The shore-based facilities include a compressor and a dedicated Nitrox filling station, making Enriched Air diving readily available for those looking to extend their bottom times. A full range of rental kit is available on-site for divers who do not wish to carry their own equipment.

For those staying at the centre, the complex includes hostel-style dormitories and private apartments. This 'Dive & Stay' setup allows for a seamless transition from accommodation to the dive boat.

The reefs are home to a diverse array of tropical fish, including Angelfish (Pomacanthidae), Parrotfish, Butterflyfish, Damselfish, and various species of grunts and sergeant majors. You will often see large fish such as Great barracuda (Sphyraena barracuda) and Jacks (Carangidae) patrolling the area.

The reef structure itself is built from a variety of corals and sponges (Porifera), providing a home for many smaller inhabitants. Look for Octopus (Octopus vulgaris) and Moray eel (Muraenidae) tucked into the crevices of the rocky reef.

Macro life enthusiasts can find Seahorse (Hippocampus kuda), Pufferfish (Arothron hispidus), and various shrimp among the corals. You may also encounter sea turtles and rays (Batoidea) during your dives.

For those interested in larger pelagics, the area can host sightings of various rays and larger reef fish species typical of the Caribbean.

Diving in the Tayrona National Park area is subject to varying conditions depending on the specific site. While many sites are calm and suitable for all levels, Salidero can experience moderate currents that require more active buoyancy control.

Night diving is a supported activity at the centre, offering a different perspective on the reef's nocturnal inhabitants.
