Channel Road Inn, A Four Sisters Inn

Channel Road Inn is a small historic guesthouse rather than a large resort, with 15 individually decorated rooms and a bed-and-breakfast rhythm. The building began life in 1910 as a Colonial Revival home designed by architect Frank T. Kegley, and its Craftsman details remain part of the setting, including the oak front door and tiled living-room fireplace.

You get the useful comforts of a boutique stay without the machinery of a big hotel: full breakfast prepared in the on-site kitchen, an afternoon wine hour with savoury bites, freshly baked cookies, coffee, tea, soft drinks and filtered water. The lobby was refreshed and several Signature rooms were renovated in 2025. English is spoken by the hotel team, so everyday arrangements are straightforward.

The address is 219 W. Channel Road in Santa Monica Canyon, just off Highway 1 and close to the coast. Will Rogers State Beach is about a quarter of a mile away on foot, with sandy beach access and a direct link to the Santa Monica coastal area. Santa Monica Beach is roughly half a mile away, while Venice Beach is about 3.7 miles down the coast.

You are in Los Angeles, but not in the middle of the usual city sprawl. The immediate area includes restaurants such as Golden Bull, Il Ristorante di Giorgio Baldi and Patrick's Roadhouse, all within about 0.05 miles. Eames House is under 0.1 miles away, and the surrounding Santa Monica area brings shops and restaurants, with Santa Monica Pier, Tongva Park and its aquarium about 1.8 miles away. Los Angeles International Airport is about 7 miles from the inn.

The 15 guestrooms are individually decorated and all have private bathrooms. They range from compact rooms for two to larger suites, so the sensible choice depends on whether you want a simple base or a little more room to spread out. The Signature Queen Suite with Sofa Bed accommodates up to three guests; the Signature Studio Suite is the larger family-friendly option, while the King rooms keep things simple for a couple.

For a more characterful night, the Superior King + Fireplace puts the room's defining feature in the name. Selected rooms also have jetted tubs or partial ocean views, and some offer balconies. Air conditioning and heating cover the practical side of the room, while the non-smoking policy applies throughout the inn. The Signature collection includes an accessible guestroom, with step-free routes from parking to check-in, dining areas and the room; the historic building still has some areas that are not accessible for mobility assistance.

Breakfast is the main event here, included as part of the bed-and-breakfast formula. It is a full buffet-style spread prepared in the on-site kitchen, with a daily chef's-choice signature entrée alongside fresh-squeezed orange juice, homemade granola, quiche, baked goods and yoghurt. You can also have breakfast served in your room, which is a respectable way to start a morning when the rest of the day involves early plans.

There is no hotel restaurant or bar to turn the evening into a production, but the afternoon wine hour supplies a glass of wine and savoury bites. Freshly baked cookies arrive daily, and fruit, wine and champagne are available. For anything more substantial, Golden Bull, Il Ristorante di Giorgio Baldi and Patrick's Roadhouse are close by, so dinner does not require a major expedition.

The Pacific is the obvious diversion. Will Rogers State Beach is within walking distance, and the inn provides the sort of easy coastal base that suits a day spent outdoors rather than a timetable packed with hotel activities. The garden, terrace, sun terrace and outdoor furniture give you somewhere to sit with a drink, a book or the sort of expression that suggests you have finally stopped checking the clock.

If you want something mildly competitive, pickleball equipment is available to borrow. Santa Monica also puts you within reach of the Pier and its aquarium, the parks around Palisades and Rustic Canyon, the Venice Beach Boardwalk and the cultural attractions around Los Angeles. Back at the inn, board games and puzzles are available for a quieter evening, and the concierge can help with local arrangements.

Check-in runs from 4 pm to 8 pm, so late arrivals need planning rather than optimism. You need photo identification and the card used for the booking at check-in. Check-out is from 7.30 am to 11 am, giving you a workable departure window without pretending that every morning starts at the same speed.

Free public parking is available on site, but spaces cannot be reserved; street parking is also available. Wi-Fi is free throughout the inn, and daily housekeeping, concierge service and luggage storage are provided. There is a gift shop on site. Children of any age are welcome, with family rooms and cots or extra beds available according to the selected accommodation. Dog-friendly rooms are available, with a dog bed and food and water bowls; service animals are welcome.
