Hotel Victor puts you in the middle of South Beach rather than somewhere that requires a taxi every time you fancy a swim, a meal or a look at the old Art Deco streets. It is a beachfront hotel with an Atlantic-facing pool, air-conditioned rooms and the sort of facilities that let you choose between going out and doing absolutely nothing. Both are legitimate holiday activities, especially when the sea has already taken its share of your energy.

Couples get the easiest fit here: a king room for a straightforward base, a suite when you want more room around the bed, or a penthouse suite when the room itself is part of the occasion. Families are catered for too, with rooms using two double beds. The atmosphere is urban South Beach, with restaurants, bars, the beach and historic buildings close enough to reach on foot rather than by expedition.

Miami International Airport is about 11 miles from the hotel by road. Miami Seaplane Base is around 4.5 miles away by road. The main city transport links are across the water: Museum Park and Bayfront Park rail stations are roughly 5 miles away by road, while the nearest listed metro stations are around the same distance.

The room choice is mostly about how much space you want after the beach, the city or a long day of travelling. A Superior King Room keeps things simple for two, while the Deluxe King Room gives you more room to spread out. If a balcony matters, the King Suite with Balcony is the obvious direction; the larger king suites and penthouse suites suit a couple who want separate space for sitting, dressing and generally not stepping over the other person's luggage.

For four guests, the double-bed rooms are the practical choice, with two double beds rather than a heroic attempt to make one bed do everything. Accessible versions are available in selected king, double and suite layouts. That is useful when the room needs to work around mobility requirements, not just look tidy in a photograph.

The sleeping basics are properly geared to warm, humid Miami: air conditioning, tropical views through the windows, plush white bedding and modern bathrooms with bathrobes. Rooms also have flat-screen televisions, MP3 docking stations and a wardrobe or closet. The property is non-smoking throughout, and lifts make the upper floors easier to reach. You are not boxed into hotel dining. South Beach does not ask you to choose between staying in and going out; it simply puts both options close together.

The Atlantic-facing pool is the main place to settle when you want water without sand. Pool and beach towels are available, along with sun loungers and beach chairs, a sun terrace, outdoor furniture and garden areas. You can make the day as energetic or as horizontal as you like; the equipment does not insist on a schedule.

For the more deliberate recovery plan, the hammam is a Turkish-style bath house with massage services and other spa treatments. A sauna and spa and wellness centre are also available, while the fitness centre gives you somewhere to move without turning the holiday into a training camp. These are useful options when your legs have had enough of the water but are not ready for the sofa.

Bicycles are available for exploring South Beach, and cycling is a practical way to reach places that are close on the map but less appealing in the heat. You can also use the beach, go snorkelling, join a tour or class about local culture, or play at a golf course within 3 km. The hotel can arrange excursions through its tour desk, and the concierge is there when you want help turning a free afternoon into an actual plan.

Check-in starts at 16:00 and check-out is by 11:00. You must be at least 21 to check in, and you need a valid photo ID plus a credit card with an EMV chip. The same card used for the booking must be present at arrival. Cash is not accepted. A refundable damage deposit is authorised on arrival and returned after the property inspection, normally within 14 days of check-out.

A daily service fee and its tax are payable on arrival. The service covers access to the spa, WiFi, bicycle hire, use of the computer and iPads, fitness-centre access, printing, in-room dining and pool cabanas. That is worth factoring into your booking decision before you arrive, because the headline room arrangement is not the whole practical picture.

Private parking is available nearby, with valet parking, and no reservation is needed. The front desk operates around the clock; concierge service, a tour desk, an on-site cash machine, daily housekeeping and laundry or dry-cleaning services are available. Children of any age are welcome, although children aged six and above are charged as adults. Cots and extra beds are not available, and pets are not allowed.
