Tokong Laut, Perhentian Islands: Pinnacle Diving

Tokong Laut, or the 'Temple of the Sea', is a well-known submerged pinnacle in the Perhentian Islands. This site rises from the seabed and extends down, with its deepest point reaching around 25 metres. From the moment you descend, you find yourself navigating around this natural structure, which is covered in vibrant growth. The topography guides your dive, allowing you to explore different sections of the pinnacle, encountering the marine life that congregates around its slopes and overhangs.

The pinnacle itself is adorned with a rich display of soft corals, sponges, and gorgonians. These formations create a habitat for smaller reef fish and provide a textured, colourful backdrop to the dive. As you move around the site, pay attention to the crevices and ledges; this is where you might spot creatures like white-eyed moray eels (Gymnothorax thyrsoideus) and various nudibranchs. The structure of the pinnacle offers sheltered spots, making it a good place to observe these more discreet inhabitants.

Beyond the reef, Tokong Laut is a dynamic marine environment, attracting schooling fish. You can expect to encounter large schools of barracudas (Sphyraena barracuda) and various trevallies (Carangidae family) moving in unison. These schools often circle the pinnacle, creating an immersive experience as you swim alongside them. Keep an eye out in the blue, as these pelagic encounters are a significant drawing card for this dive.

Larger animals are a regular feature at Tokong Laut. Both green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) and hawksbill sea turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata) are frequently observed, often resting on ledges or cruising slowly past. Bamboo sharks (Chiloscyllium punctatum) are also present, often found resting on the sandy bottom around the base of the pinnacle or tucked away in quieter spots. It’s always worth scanning the deeper perimeter, particularly if you are diving during the right season.

During the months of August through October, there's a heightened chance of encountering whale sharks (Rhincodon typus). These majestic pelagics visit the site, feeding on plankton. While not a guaranteed sighting, their presence during this window adds an element of anticipation to the dive. The deep blue beyond the pinnacle is where these encounters typically occur, requiring you to remain aware of your surroundings as you explore the main structure.
