Diving Bera D'coral, Sal: wall diving in Cape Verde

Approaching Bera D'coral by boat on the east side of Sal, the dive begins over a reef crest that quickly transitions into a defined wall. This wall offers a consistent drop, with the main reef section extending down to around 20 metres before giving way to a sandy slope. Depending on the specific contour you follow, you can find the reef-to-sand transition extending slightly deeper, sometimes around 26 metres, marking the end of the vertical structure.

The topography here is characterised by this distinct reef edge and wall, rather than a broad, flat plateau. As you descend, you'll encounter small crevices and ledges carved into the rocky substrate, providing shelter and points of interest. While the site is often described by its name suggesting coral, it's more accurately a rocky wall or reef with a mix of hard and soft growth adapted to the specific conditions of this part of Sal.

One of the defining features of Bera D'coral is its relative shelter compared to some of the more exposed dive sites around Cape Verde. However, this doesn't mean it's uniformly placid. The site can experience moderate currents, which tend to increase noticeably around tidal changes, particularly during high and low water. Understanding these tidal influences is key to planning your dive to either embrace or mitigate the stronger flow.

Visibility at Bera D'coral is typically good, ranging from 15 to 40 metres, offering clear views of the wall structure and its inhabitants. The changing light as you move along the wall and descend provides a dynamic backdrop to the dive. Even with potential currents, the inherent structure of the wall provides natural guidance, making navigation straightforward once you understand the current's direction.

While it's considered more beginner-friendly than some of the deeper, more exposed wall or wreck dives in the region, Bera D'coral still requires attention to conditions. The variability in current, especially during tidal shifts, means you need to be comfortable with active diving and managing your position against a flow. This characteristic variability makes it a good site for divers looking to gain experience in mild to moderate current scenarios.
