Ancora Reef, Sal: reef and wall exploration near Santa Maria

Ancora is positioned off the coast of Santa Maria on Sal Island, easily accessible via a brief 15-minute zodiac ride from the beach. The site is defined by its volcanic topography, starting with a wide, shallow reef plateau that provides an easy entry point for many divers. As you move away from the shallowest sections, the terrain transitions into a small wall or steep ledge that drops down towards the deeper perimeter. This structure creates a diverse seabed where sunlight can penetrate easily, fostering a healthy ecosystem of resident reef species.

The dive profile begins in the shallower zones, typically between 8 and 12 metres, where the reef is most accessible and the light is strongest. From this plateau, the seabed steps down more significantly to reach depths of approximately 20 to 25 metres. This vertical variation provides different micro-habitats, allowing you to move between sunlit reef areas and deeper, more sheltered zones. This transition is ideal for those looking to explore different depths without needing heavy decompression or technical training.

As you navigate the reef, you will notice various quiet pockets and ledges created by the volcanic rock. These crevices and sheltered areas serve as primary resting spots for several local species. It is common to find stingrays resting on the sandy patches and small sharks, such as nurse sharks or catsharks, tucked into the folds of the wall. These encounters are usually calm, as these animals use the site's natural geometry for protection from any moving water.

The pelagic environment at Ancora is influenced by the movement of water flowing in and out of Santa Maria Bay. While the site is generally known for being a quiet and easy dive, it is subject to the currents that connect the bay to the open Atlantic. Depending on the time of day and the regional weather, you may experience a gentle drift or light current as you move across the reef. This makes the site a versatile location, suitable for a relaxed reef tour or a more active drift dive.

The marine life here is focused on the reef structure rather than large oceanic migrations. You can expect a high density of tropical reef fish patrolling the plateau and the edge of the wall. Larger animals like sea turtles and dolphins are frequently observed in these waters, often cruising through the upper water column. The site offers a reliable way to see typical Atlantic reef inhabitants in a setting that is much more sheltered than the high-energy sites found elsewhere on Sal.

The visibility at Ancora is consistently good, typically ranging between 15 and 20 metres. This clarity makes it an excellent spot for navigating the reef features and spotting small creatures in the rock crevices. During the window from March to May, the water temperature can reach up to 27°C, which provides a comfortable thermal environment for extended exploration. This combination of clarity and temperature makes the site a dependable choice for year-round diving in the region.
