Hilton Cabo Verde is a large beachfront resort in Santa Maria, with enough going on to keep a non-diving partner occupied while you are underwater. The setting is straightforward rather than secluded: beach, town, restaurants, a casino, fitness facilities and evening entertainment all sit within the same holiday equation.

The useful part for a diver is the easy rhythm. You can come back from the sea, use the air conditioning, order room service or head straight for the bar without having to organise the rest of the day from scratch. Families are catered for as well, with a kids' club, family rooms and babysitting services available.

English-speaking staff are not confirmed in the hotel information, so there is no language promise to make here. The resort does, however, offer a 24-hour front desk, concierge service and a tour desk when the next day's arrangements need sorting.

You are in Santa Maria, Cape Verde, on the island of Sal. The resort faces a white-sand beach, with Praia de Santa Maria around 300 metres away by the mapped road route. This is not a hotel in an isolated corner of the island: the town is close enough for you to combine resort facilities with a walk out for a drink, dinner or a look at local life.

The local fisherman's pier is nearby, and Funana Casa da Cultura is roughly half a mile away on foot. Praia da Ponta Preta is about 0.8 miles away on foot, while Viveiro, Botanical Garden & Zoo di Terra is around 2.2 miles away on foot. Pedra de Lume volcano is also listed among the nearby sights, giving you a land-based outing when the surface interval needs to last a little longer.

Amílcar Cabral International Airport is about 11 miles away by road, with the drive taking around 16 minutes. The hotel has an airport shuttle, and car hire is available if you would rather explore Sal under your own steam.

The room choice is mainly about how much space and outlook you want, rather than finding a completely different style of accommodation. Standard king and twin rooms cover couples and dive partners who prefer separate beds, while rooms with terraces or partial ocean views give you a more useful place to sit between the beach and dinner.

For three people sharing, a king room is the practical route. Families can look at connecting rooms or a connecting family suite, which keeps the sleeping arrangements more workable than trying to fit everyone into one room. The one-bedroom suites are the larger step up, with options facing the ocean, garden or pool; choose the ocean-front version if the view matters more than being close to the family action around the resort.

Air conditioning will matter when you return warm, salty and ready to stop being useful for the day. Rooms also have soundproofing, a minibar, tea and coffee-making facilities, a desk and free WiFi. The spa and wellness centre offers a relaxation area, steam room, sauna, hot tub and a range of treatments. Massages include full-body, couples, back, neck, foot, head and hand options, with body treatments, scrubs, wraps, facials, manicures and pedicures also available. That is a fairly solid menu for the particular condition known as “my calves are still negotiating with me”.

The fitness centre has classes and personal training, with aerobics also available. If you still have energy to spend, you can hire a bicycle, use the on-site water-sports facilities, go snorkelling, canoeing or windsurfing, or arrange fishing away from the property.
