Cistern Point, Peter Island: Discovering BVI's Reeef Caves

Cistern Point presents itself as an approachable reef system just off Peter Island, a dive that begins its exploration at a shallow 6 metres. As you descend, the reef unfolds, revealing a landscape defined by an unusual topography: natural, cistern-shaped holes punctuate the coral structure. These depressions are not mere indentations; they are active micro-environments that draw in a variety of marine inhabitants, inviting divers to peer into their shadowy depths.

The journey through Cistern Point takes you down to a maximum depth of 12 metres, a profile that ensures ample light penetration across the entire site. This radiant environment illuminates the reef's natural contours and the subtle movements of its residents. The play of light and shadow within the cisterns creates compelling visual dynamics, offering an ever-changing canvas for those with an eye for underwater photography, from wide-angle vistas to macro details within the coral structure.

Within the reef's varied architecture, you'll encounter a vibrant community. Keep a keen watch for eels (Anguilliformes), often found tucked into crevices or extending from their rocky hideaways. These elusive residents use the reef's natural protection to ambush prey. The site's numerous nooks and crannies provide perfect shelter, encouraging a close inspection of each rock and coral formation along your path.

A highlight when diving Cistern Point is the opportunity to observe nurse sharks (Ginglymostoma cirratum), which frequently patrol the site, especially around the deeper pockets and overhangs. These benthic predators are often seen resting on the sandy bottom or slowly moving through the reef, a testament to the site's rich food sources. Their presence indicates a healthy ecosystem where larger species find sustenance and shelter within the reef's structure.

The site is also a favoured haunt for tarpon (Megalops atlanticus), whose silver scales flash in the abundant sunlight. These impressive fish often gather in schools, moving with a calm, deliberate rhythm through the water column. Observing them move through the reef's open spaces, particularly near the natural depressions, adds a powerful sense of presence to the dive, showcasing the larger predatory fish that thrive in this environment.
