La Coucoune, Martinique: Wall dives and garden eels

Your dive at La Coucoune begins on a vibrant plateau at 12 metres, a welcoming introduction to the rich marine environment of Martinique. From this initial depth, the topography transitions gracefully into a dramatic vertical wall, plunging down to 35 metres, offering a multi-level exploration. The wall itself is an artist's palette, adorned with a dense tropical flora that seems to bloom in every shade imaginable, creating a truly immersive experience as you trace its contours.

As you descend along the wall, the intricate details of the reef come into focus. You'll navigate past fields of gorgonians, their delicate branches swaying gently with the subtle movements of the water, providing shelter and sustenance for smaller inhabitants. Spirographs, with their feathery double-spirals, unfurl from their tubes, filtering nutrients from the water, while a rich variety of multicoloured sponges cling to the rock face, adding texture and depth to the already vibrant scene.

Beyond the dazzling verticality, the dive continues to unfold onto a soft, sandy bottom. Here, an expansive dune comes alive with colonies of garden eels (Heterocongrinae), their slender bodies swaying in unison from their burrows, creating a living carpet of hypnotic motion. This intricate dance of hundreds of eels, extending and retracting with cautious curiosity, is a true highlight, a testament to the thriving biodiversity found within this region.

While observing the garden eels, keep a keen eye on the surrounding sandy expanse. It's not uncommon to encounter leopard rays (Himantura undulata) gliding effortlessly over the seabed, their distinctive patterns merging with the light and shadow. Their graceful presence adds an element of excitement to the dive, a reminder of the larger, pelagic life that frequents this rich underwater landscape, especially when transitioning between the reef and the open sand.
