True South

English is spoken by the hotel team, so you can sort out the useful things without resorting to elaborate hand signals. True South is a seven-room guest house on Maradhoo, built around a local Maldivian feel, with the beach only a few steps away and the islands of Addu opening out beyond the front door.

This is a practical choice for divers who want more than a room, a boat timetable and a buffet corridor. You can swim, eat, hire a bicycle and go exploring through the connected islands, then come back to a garden, a sea-facing terrace or the shared lounge. The atmosphere is informal and local rather than polished into anonymity.

The location also gives you something unusual for the Maldives: movement. Gan, Feydhoo, Maradhoo and Hithadhoo are linked by causeways, so you are not confined to one small island for the whole stay. Cross the equator, follow the western edge of Addu and watch the sunset without having to book an excursion every time you fancy leaving the property.

The guest house sits on the western side of the island, beside the lagoon and lush vegetation, with access to a white-sand beach just a few steps away. Sun loungers are available for the moments when your only sensible plan is to sit down and stay there.

Gan International Airport is 1.9 miles away. The airport connection is straightforward by local standards: a domestic flight from Velana International Airport in Malé takes about 100 minutes, followed by a roughly 10-minute car transfer from Gan. True South can arrange the domestic flight and airport transfer, or you can book the flight directly with Maldivian Airlines.

Addu is built for independent exploring. Bicycle, motorbike and car hire are available, while nearby island life includes cafés and restaurants rather than a single resort complex pretending to be a town. Gan is a former British naval base, Feydhoo has its harbour and mosques, and Hithadhoo offers a longer island outing with historical sites, local fields and natural areas.

The room choice comes down less to counting beds and more to deciding how much space and outlook you want around your diving routine. Couples who want the sea in the picture should look first at the sea-view rooms, while the terrace option gives you an easier route outside when the room needs airing and the day has not yet become unbearably warm. The larger sea-view categories make more sense if you value room to spread out rather than treating the bedroom as a place where you fall into bed.

Air conditioning takes care of the tropical heat, with a fan available as well. Each room has a private bathroom with hot and cold rain shower, towels, toiletries and a hairdryer, while the minibar, bottled water, kettle, tea and coffee cover the basic post-dive recovery kit. A desk, chair, wardrobe and luggage rack keep the practical clutter under control.

There is also a Smart TV with streaming services, free WiFi and a telephone, although the more useful luxury may be the ability to close the door, cool down and stop making decisions. Daily housekeeping, room service and a drying rack for clothes help keep the damp gear of island life from taking over the room. All rooms are on the ground floor.

Breakfast starts with a continental option, alongside à la carte choices featuring local specialities and fresh fruit. You can also have breakfast in your room, which is handy when an early start has made conversation an unreasonable demand. The on-site café serves local dishes and a variety of other food, giving you somewhere to settle without turning every meal into a logistical exercise.

The food has a distinctly island-shaped side. Beach barbecues, seafood dinners and romantic dinners are part of the offering, while Addu bendi provides a local sweet speciality worth trying when you have room left after the main course. A coffee house on site handles the simpler requirements: tea, coffee and a place to sit before or after the sea has taken the edge off your concentration.

Picnic baskets are available for island outings, and the barbecue facilities give the evening a more informal route than a formal restaurant meal. Room service runs on limited hours, so it is sensible to plan around the actual day rather than assuming food will appear at any hour simply because you have been underwater.

Two swimming pools give you an alternative to the sea when you want a short, uncomplicated dip. There is a sun terrace, outdoor seating, a garden and a shared lounge with television, so the property covers the essentials for the part of the day when your legs have had enough of excursions but your evening has not yet started.

The stronger reason to stay here is what lies beyond the gate. Bicycles can be hired for riding across the causeways and visiting the neighbouring islands, with guided and independent tours available. You can head towards Gan for its British-era history, visit Feydhoo Harbour and its local atmosphere, or make a longer day of Hithadhoo, where historical sites, local flora and fauna, Eadhigali Kilhi, Koattey and taro fields provide more substance than another round of photographs beside the same palm tree.

Canoeing, fishing, snorkelling, boat excursions and island-hopping are also available, with some activities taking place away from the property. Picnic trips to uninhabited islands and visits to nearby resorts offer a change of scenery for couples who want an outing without committing to a full expedition. Live music and performances are part of the available activities too, for evenings when silence has finally stopped being attractive.

Plan your arrival around the domestic connection from Malé. The flight to Gan takes about 100 minutes, and the road transfer from Gan International Airport takes about 10 minutes. An airport shuttle and car shuttle service can be arranged through the property, and the domestic flight can also be organised through True South. If your international flight reaches Malé after 15:00, a same-day transfer may not be possible, so the connection deserves attention before you book the long-haul ticket.

Check-in runs from 14:00 to 15:00, with check-out from 12:00 to 13:00. A 24-hour front desk, luggage storage, currency exchange and a tour desk are available, which keeps the practical side of island travel reasonably manageable. Daily housekeeping, laundry and ironing services are also available.

WiFi is free throughout the property. Air conditioning, room service, a minibar, tea and coffee facilities, a safety deposit box and a flat-screen television cover the useful room basics, while the property also has a coffee house, outdoor seating and pool and beach towels. Children of any age are welcome, but cots and extra beds are not available, so the room’s stated occupancy matters when you are travelling with family.
