Chira Rani, N'Gouja, Mayotte: Reef and Wall Exploration

Venturing out to Chira Rani, you'll find a sprawling reef system where the primary dive action unfolds along its western side. The approach typically involves anchoring over a sandy bank, providing a stable starting point before you begin your descent into the reef's structure. This specific anchoring method allows for a gradual transition from the shallows into the deeper segments of the site, setting the stage for a comprehensive exploration.

From these sandy banks, the dive immediately transitions to a series of impressive walls, or 'tombants,' that plunge from around 15 metres down to 25 metres. Here, the reef provides a vertical habitat teeming with life, where you can drift alongside the coral formations, observing the intricate ecosystems that thrive on these sheer faces. The varying depths along the wall allow for different perspectives on the reef's topography and its resident fauna.

Beyond the main wall, the terrain opens up to an expansive sandy seabed at depths of around 30 metres, dotted with numerous coral bommies. These 'patates' rise significantly from the seafloor, some reaching up to a dozen metres towards the surface, creating isolated oases of life. Exploring these individual coral structures is like navigating a submerged sculpture garden, each offering its own unique micro-environment to discover.

The dive profile at Chira Rani is designed to progressively shallower depths, culminating in the exploration of the vibrant coral gardens situated on the reef's plateau. These gardens, typically found at around 5 metres, are an active ecosystem forming the perfect conclusion to your dive. It's here, in these shallower, well-lit areas, that you'll shift your focus to the smaller, more intricate residents of the reef.

These coral gardens are particularly rewarding for those with an eye for detail, offering an ideal environment for spotting numerous species. Keep a keen lookout for the intricate patterns of various shrimp or the delicate, often colourful, nudibranchs (sea slugs) as they move across the corals and rock formations. This final segment of the dive allows for an unhurried appreciation of the reef's macro life in excellent light conditions.
