Five modern suites sit in the heart of Chania Old Harbour, where narrow lanes, old stone and everyday city life all meet within a few steps. Agave Suites suits couples particularly well, with private entrances, soundproofing and the useful independence of an aparthotel rather than a conventional hotel room.

The welcome is practical but thoughtful: fresh coffee, tea, nuts and chocolate are prepared for your arrival. There is also a 24-hour guest communication service, handy when your flight is late, your plans change or you need a recommendation without turning the evening into an administrative exercise.

The reception team speaks Greek and English, so you can deal with the useful things directly. Chania is on the doorstep; the suite is where you retreat when the harbour has had enough of you for one evening.

You are in Chania Town, Greece, in the old harbour area rather than beside a resort beach. Mitropoleos Square is roughly a four-minute walk away, the Folklore Museum is about 300 metres from the property, and the Old Venetian Harbour takes around three minutes on foot. The Kucuk Hasan Mosque is about five minutes away.

This is a useful base for a day that starts in the historic centre and ends by the water. Ancient Kydonia lies almost beside the property, while the Venetian boatyards are around a ten-minute walk away. Firkas Fortress, the Municipal Art Gallery and Etz Hayyim Synagogue are also within walking distance.

Koum Kapi Beach is about 0.6 miles away on foot, with Nea Chora Beach around 0.8 miles away. If you want a wider choice of beaches, Chryssi Akti is about 1.8 miles away and Yannis Beach around 2.3 miles. Bars are closer than the sand: Conor Pass is roughly 0.1 miles away, while Cheers Bar and Saloon Bar are around the same distance.

The suites are arranged for two, with a sofa adding useful sitting space and, in the suitable family-room arrangements, room for one child. A cot can be requested for a child aged up to two, while extra beds are not available. That makes the choice fairly simple: couples can concentrate on whether they want a balcony, more room to spread out or the private hot tub.

The Deluxe Suite with Spa Bath is the one to choose if soaking matters to your evening; the hot tub is provided only in that category. For a more straightforward couple's stay, the Suite with Balcony brings a city view, outdoor chairs and a table, plus a king-size bed. The balcony is better suited to morning coffee than to pretending you have rented a Greek island.

Air conditioning, heating and soundproofing cover the less glamorous but more useful parts of the night. The suites also have a refrigerator, coffee machine and electric kettle, so you can keep water cold and make something hot without going back out. A walk-in shower, bathrobe, slippers, towels and toiletries are ready in the private bathroom, while extra-long beds and a top-quality COCO-MAT mattress make the post-dive collapse a fairly well-supported affair.

Free WiFi runs throughout the property, and the flat-screen television includes satellite channels and streaming services. Non-smoking rooms, hypoallergenic features and a private entrance round out the practical details.

There is no meal plan to organise your days around, so the suites work best for you if you prefer to choose your own breakfast and evening routine. The in-room coffee machine, kettle and refrigerator cover the first coffee and a few supplies, particularly useful when the legs are still negotiating with the rest of you.

For proper meals, Chania's cafés, bars and restaurants begin close to the door. Conor Pass is about 0.1 miles away, with Cheers Bar and Saloon Bar at roughly the same distance. The old harbour adds plenty of choice for a drink or dinner, while Theodosi is about 1.7 miles away and Porto Kalamaki Restaurant around 3.4 miles by road.

The advantage here is flexibility rather than an in-house dining programme. You can eat early, eat late, or follow the smell of grilled food through the old town without needing a taxi back to a distant resort.

The main activity is the city itself. From Agave Suites, you can walk to the Venetian Harbour, historic churches, museums, old fortifications and the narrow streets of Chania without planning an excursion around a timetable. The Folklore Museum is close enough for a short visit, while Firkas Fortress and the Venetian boatyards give you an easy outing when you want to keep moving but not commit to a full day away.

For quieter time indoors, the Deluxe Suite with Spa Bath has its own hot tub, and the property also has a fitness centre. Use of the fitness centre carries an additional charge. Outdoor furniture is available, giving you somewhere to sit with a coffee or cool down after walking through the old town.

The host also offers activities services in Crete and can help with recommendations. That is useful if you want to add a hike, sailing trip or cultural outing to your stay, while still returning to a compact city base rather than an isolated resort.

Chania International Airport is about 8 miles away by road. An airport shuttle is available through the property, and car hire can also be arranged. If you are driving, private parking is available on site with reservation, while street parking is also listed. Parking spaces are limited, so this is one detail worth settling before arrival rather than discovering it with luggage in the boot.

Check-in runs from 14:00 to midnight and check-out from 08:00 to 11:00. You need to let the property know your expected arrival time, and photo identification and a credit card are required at check-in. Private and express check-in and check-out are available, with luggage storage for the awkward gap between leaving the suite and leaving Chania.

Quiet hours run from 23:00 to 08:00, parties are not permitted and smoking is prohibited throughout.
