You have restaurants, bars, pools, a gym and room service under the same roof. That matters when the day's plan is dictated by tides, boat times and the rather less glamorous question of whether your legs still work. Families are welcome, while couples get a useful choice between compact rooms, pool views and larger terraces.

The feel is straightforward and sociable. The Anchor Pub shows live football, the outdoor pool is seasonal, and the indoor pool runs all year, leaving you free to make the evening as active or as uneventful as you like.

You are in St Paul's Bay, Malta, on Blacktail Street, close to the Bugibba area. Bigibba Square is about a 5-minute walk away, bringing shops and places to eat within easy reach when you want to leave the hotel for a change of scene.

The Mediterranean coast is also around a 5-minute walk away. Bugibba Perched Beach is roughly 0.7 mile on foot, while Tax-Xama Bay Beach is about 0.9 mile away. Qawra Point Beach sits around 1.4 miles away by road, so this is a coastal base rather than a hotel planted directly on the sand.

The surroundings give you plenty to do on a non-diving day. Malta National Aquarium is about 1.3 miles away, Mdina is around a 10-minute drive, Popeye Village and Selmun Palace are about 7 minutes by car, and Valletta is roughly 20 minutes away. St Paul's Bay is lively, with dining and shopping nearby rather than hidden behind a gate.

Room choice makes a real difference here. For two people who want more room to spread out, the Double Room with Terrace gives you a larger indoor space and somewhere to sit outside. The standard double rooms are more compact, but you can choose between an urban view and a pool view; that is the practical distinction, not a matter of hotel poetry.

Couples may also prefer the Superior Double Room with Pool View, while a family has the option of a Superior Family Room with two large king-size beds. The Two-Bedroom Apartment with Terrace is the sensible arrangement for four people who would rather have separate sleeping areas than negotiate every night around one double bed.

Air conditioning and central heating cover the main temperature swings, and soundproof rooms may help when your own sleep is more valuable than somebody else's late-night enthusiasm. Every room has a balcony or terrace, a fridge, tea and coffee facilities, a safe, flat-screen television with international channels and a private bathroom with towels, toiletries and a hairdryer. There are two bars on site. The named one is The Anchor Pub, an indoor and outdoor pub and lounge bar serving traditional pub meals and snacks until late. Live sport covers the English Premier League, Italian Serie A and Spanish La Liga, which gives you a clear evening plan if the weather turns or the rest of the group has run out of conversation.

A snack bar, coffee house and room service are also available, with room service running around the clock. Late dinner is possible, and sustainable cocktails reuse citrus zest and fruit trimmings rather than sending every useful bit straight to the bin. Special-diet menus can be requested, and breakfast can be taken in your room when an early start has already won the argument.

The indoor swimming pool is heated and open throughout the year, while the outdoor pool is seasonal. Add a heated jacuzzi, sun loungers and umbrellas, and you have several ways to spend an afternoon without putting shoes on. The indoor option is particularly handy when the Mediterranean has decided to behave like a very large, very blue fridge.

The fitness centre is free to use, and on-demand massages are available for muscles that have spent the day carrying cylinders, cameras or simply more optimism than usual. Billiards provides a less strenuous contest, while the shared lounge and live sports at The Anchor Pub cover the important middle ground between activity and horizontal recovery.

For a day away from the water, the hotel can arrange cultural excursions, with Popeye Village, Selmun Palace, Mdina and Valletta all within driving range. The nearby aquarium is another manageable outing, and Bigibba Square gives couples or families an easy option for a short walk, a browse and a meal outside the resort.

Malta International Airport is about 9 miles away by road. A paid airport shuttle is available on request, and taxi service can be arranged from the airport. If you are using public transport, the Imhasel bus stop is served by routes 41, 42, 48, 49, 203, 221, 222, 223, 225, 250, N11 and X1A; from the stop, the hotel is about 300 metres along Triq Il-Kahli.

Check-in runs from 15:00 to midnight, with a 24-hour front desk for arrivals and practical help. Check-out is from 07:00 to 11:00. You need photo identification and a credit card at check-in, and the minimum age for checking in is 18. Luggage storage, concierge service, a tour desk and an on-site cash machine are available.

Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel. Lifts serve the upper floors, and facilities include wheelchair access, accessible rooms, a lower bathroom sink and toilets with grab rails. Waste is separated into glass, mixed waste, recyclable material, organic waste, BCRS items and batteries. The hotel also uses cocktail techniques that reuse citrus zest and fruit trimmings, and has organised beach clean-ups and staff charity initiatives.

Further changes are planned, including solar panels to heat the indoor pool, more efficient televisions and laundry machines, and reusable glass containers in rooms as part of a plan to remove 40,000 small plastic water bottles each year.
