Tortuga Diving Vera-Playa

Located in the Vera Playa area of Almería, Tortuga Diving is a PADI 5 Star centre that serves as a gateway to the diverse underwater topography of the Mediterranean coast. The centre is positioned within the commercial avenue, making it easily accessible to local amenities, and manages all logistics from the nearby Puerto de la Balsica in Villaricos.

Whether you are looking to complete your first certification or are pursuing technical diving, the centre operates year-round. The local seabed is characterised by a mix of sandy plains, isolated volcanic rocks, and submerged mountain ranges, offering a varied landscape for every level of experience.

As a PADI 5 Star centre, Tortuga Diving maintains a high standard of training and safety. The team operates with a focus on small groups, ensuring a guide-to-diver ratio of 1:1 for guided immersions.

The centre is also deeply committed to marine conservation, collaborating with the Equinac network for the protection of sea turtles and cetaceans. This environmental focus extends to their operational standards and their role in the local diving community.

The centre offers a comprehensive range of PADI courses, beginning with Discover Scuba Diving (DSD) for those new to the water. From there, the curriculum follows the standard progression through Scuba Diver, Open Water Diver, and Advanced Adventurer.

For those looking to specialise or progress further, the centre provides Diver Stress & Rescue and various PADI specialties. They also cater to the technical diving community, offering training in Buceo Técnico.

The centre operates a ZURITA BOATS 750 PRO, a 7.5-metre semi-rigid vessel powered by a 200CV Suzuki outboard motor. This boat has a capacity for 12 divers, making it well-suited for organized trips to the various reefs and wrecks located north-east of the port.

Logistics are handled efficiently with transport provided from the centre to the port, including the use of trolleys to move heavy cylinders and equipment to the mooring.

The shore-based facilities include a 160-square-metre ventilated space featuring a dedicated theory room, changing rooms, and both hot and cold showers. There are specific zones for rinsing and drying your kit to ensure everything is well-maintained between dives.

A key feature for training is the on-site heated pool, which is used for skill development and course requirements. For air quality, the centre utilises a compressor equipped with an additional filter to ensure the gas is clean and reliable.

The rocky formations and submerged mountains are home to a variety of larger species. You can often spot barracudas, dentex, and various seabreams cruising the area, alongside groupers and moray eels (Muraenidae) sheltering in the crevices.

For those interested in macro life, the seabed and rocky outcrops host octopuses, nudibranchs, and scorpionfish. Spiny lobster (Palinuridae) and slipper lobsters are also frequently encountered among the rocks.

The marine scenery is enriched by diverse life, including Atlantic bonito, brown meagre, and white seabream. You may also see electric rays, octopus, and various species of snapper or sea bream near the reefs.

The diving area is generally open and typically experiences a light current, which is a factor to consider when planning your dive profile. Most of the primary dive sites are located north-east of the Puerto de la Balsica.
