Khasab - Musandam Discovery Diving

Musandam Discovery Diving is situated in Khasab, the gateway to the rugged fjords of the Musandam peninsula. Founded in 2015 by Bader Shehi, a local Omani diver, the centre has grown into a professional operation that balances exploration with a strong sense of environmental stewardship.

The area is a high-energy marine environment, where cold water upwellings bring an abundance of plankton to support a dense food chain. This nutrient-rich water makes the region one of the most biodiverse pockets in the area, offering a variety of habitats from shallow reefs to significant drop-offs.

The centre is run by a multinational team of highly qualified instructors, providing a professional atmosphere for both recreational and advanced divers. They offer instruction in English, Arabic, Spanish, Hindi, and Cypriot, ensuring clear communication for a diverse range of visitors.

Beyond training, the team is actively involved in the local ecosystem. A group of local volunteer divers works alongside the centre to support marine conservation, including reef protection and coral transplantation projects to help maintain the health of the local seabed.

As an SSI affiliated centre, Musandam Discovery Diving offers a comprehensive curriculum. You can begin your training with the Basic Diver or Open Water Diver courses and progress through to Advanced Open Water Diver.

You will regularly encounter a variety of reef fish, including Snapper (Lutjanus), Grouper (Epinephelus), and various species of Butterflyfish (Chaetodon). Schools of Jack (Carangidae) and Batfish (Platax) are also common sights around the reef structures.

For those interested in larger animals, the area is known for sea turtles, Southern stingray (Hypanus americanus), and various sharks, including white-tip reef sharks and Leopard shark (Triakis semifasciata) in July. You may also spot dolphins or Mola mola during deeper or drift dives.

The seabed is a vibrant landscape of hard coral (Scleractinia), including Porites, Acropora, Montipora, and Pavona. These are complemented by gorgonian sea fans and black corals, creating a complex habitat for the local fauna.

Macro life enthusiasts can find a variety of smaller organisms, such as Nudibranch (Chromodoris willani), various species of Shrimp (Caridea), Crab (Brachyura), and Lobster (Homaridae). Lionfish (Pterois volitans) and various species of cuttlefish are also frequently observed among the reef crevices.

The diving environment is characterised by significant nutrient density due to cold water upwellings. This biological activity makes the area a rich feeding ground for many species.

Conditions vary significantly by site, ranging from shallow, sheltered reefs to advanced wall dives involving moderate currents. Divers should be prepared for different levels of exposure depending on whether they are visiting the sheltered bays or the more exposed islands.
