Beqa Lagoon Resort

Beqa Lagoon Resort is a 25-room island resort built for days that move from the reef to the beach, then from the beach to the open-air bure for dinner. You have a direct beach, a pool, gardens and a restaurant on site, so the evening does not depend on finding a taxi or negotiating with the map.

English is spoken by the hotel team, including management, so you can deal with the practicalities of transfers, meals and your stay without hand signals. The mood comes from the setting and the programme rather than from forced theatrics: Fijian dancing, fire walking, kava ceremonies, live performances and other cultural activities take place during the week.

Couples can keep things simple with a villa and a private dipping pool, while families have room to spread out in the two-bedroom accommodation. Children of any age are welcome, with babysitting and children’s meals available.

The resort sits on Beqa Island, Fiji, directly beside a white-sand beach with sun loungers and parasols. The island is reached by boat from the main island, with the crossing taking around 45 minutes from the coast. This is a genuine island address, not a mainland hotel borrowing a tropical photograph.

The nearest listed airport is Nausori International Airport, 37 miles away by map distance. Nadi International Airport is 60 miles away, and the journey from Nadi includes around two and a half hours by road to the boat launch before the island crossing; Suva Airport transfers to the launch take around one and a half hours.

The resort’s own restaurant and bar do the heavy lifting because the mainland is not just around the corner. Pacific Harbour’s pubs are around 26 miles away, while restaurants in the Pacific Harbour area are around 9 miles away by map distance. In practice, you come here for the island rather than for an evening spent touring nearby venues.

The rooms are designed for recovery rather than complicated gadgetry: air conditioning, a ceiling fan, a refrigerator, tea and coffee-making facilities, a private bathroom and a terrace, patio or outdoor seating area. The marble bathrooms include a shower and toiletries, while the living areas in the larger accommodation add a sofa, seating and a desk. A private entrance is useful when your timetable is governed by boats, breakfast and the occasional damp towel.

For two, the private-pool villa is the obvious choice if your idea of post-dive luxury is being able to step outside and cool off without sharing the water with anyone else. The garden-view villa gives you the same general scale without the private pool. The two-bedroom ocean-view suite is the practical family option, with separate sleeping space and enough room for up to four people rather than the usual arrangement of two adults and luggage having a quiet argument over floor space.

All accommodation is on the ground floor. Daily housekeeping keeps the room from becoming a permanent staging area for wet clothes, while the refrigerator handles drinking water and the tea and coffee kit sorts out the first cup before the boat schedule starts. Wi-Fi is available throughout the resort, with a charge applying.

Meals are served in the main open-air bure, where the kitchen works across breakfast, lunch and dinner. The style is international, with fresh produce at its centre and a menu that includes local fish, New Zealand lamb and Australian beef. It is the sort of arrangement that makes sense on an island: eat where you are staying, and spend the evening looking at the lagoon instead of planning an expedition for dinner.

The poolside restaurant offers à la carte dishes, while the Bula Bar covers the liquid side of the operation with imported wine and beer, Fijian beer and cocktails. There is also a snack bar for the gap between activities and proper meals. Happy hour, live music and evening entertainment give the bar a little more life when you are not ready to call it a night.

The package is all-inclusive, with breakfast included, and vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options are available. Special-diet menus can also be arranged. A meal plan forms part of the advance arrangements for the stay, which matters here: on an island, changing your mind at the last minute is less straightforward than it is beside an urban high street.

The sensible non-diving plan starts with the beach or the outdoor pool, followed by a sun lounger and a decision that can wait until tomorrow. The resort has a private beach area, a sun terrace, garden spaces and pool or beach towels, so you can choose between salt water, fresh water and doing absolutely nothing at all.

Lali Spa is on the beachfront and offers massages and facials in an open-air setting. That is useful when your shoulders have been carrying cylinders, camera systems or simply the consequences of pretending that yesterday’s dive was not quite as tiring as it was. Spa packages, a relaxation area and a foot bath are also available.

When sitting still loses its charm, you can use the kayaks and paddleboards, go snorkelling, canoeing or hiking, or join a walking tour. Fishing and boat excursions are offered as well. Cultural excursions include village visits and trips to Suva, while the evening programme brings Fijian dancing, fire walking, kava ceremonies and other cultural shows rather than a row of televisions trying to compete with the Pacific.

The arrival logistics deserve a proper look before you commit. Boat transfers are mandatory and must be arranged with the resort before arrival; the regular boat leaves Pacific Harbour Pearl Resort Marina at 11:00 or 16:30 each day. The return boat from Beqa Lagoon Resort leaves at 10:00. A charter boat can be arranged outside those departures.

An airport shuttle is available, and the resort can organise the ground transfer from Nadi Airport to the boat launch. Allow around two and a half hours for that road transfer, or around one and a half hours from Suva Airport to the launch, before adding the crossing to Beqa Island.
