Hanging Gardens, Kimbe Bay: Wall Diving in Papua New Guinea

Hanging Gardens, a mere two minutes by boat from Walindi's pontoon, offers an immediate immersion into Kimbe Bay's vibrant underwater world. The dive begins just beneath the surface, where a dramatic vertical wall drops down to a sandy and debris-strewn bottom at approximately 30 metres. This structure creates a diverse underwater landscape, with numerous ledges and overhangs providing both shelter and varied topography for marine life.

As you descend along this impressive wall, you'll immediately notice the site's namesake: the intricate network of rope sponges that drape themselves across the cliff face. Some of these sponges extend up to three metres in length, their graceful forms often adorned with clinging crinoids, creating a living tapestry against the rock. These suspended gardens provide a striking visual element and offer a sense of scale to the dive.

Exploring the shaded areas beneath the overhangs and within the wall's large cutouts reveals prolific encrusting communities. Sponges and ascidians dominate these micro-habitats, creating textured surfaces that teem with hidden life. This complex ecosystem is a prime location for macro enthusiasts, inviting a slower pace to discover a myriad of small subjects.

Hanging Gardens truly transforms after sunset, making it an excellent choice for a night dive. As daylight fades, the vibrant daytime inhabitants retreat, and a new cast of nocturnal animals emerges from their daytime hiding spots in the caves and crevices. These creatures venture out onto the wall to feed, offering a completely different perspective on the site and the opportunity to witness unique behaviours under the beam of your dive light.
