Marsa Nakari House Reef, Marsa Alam: Exploring a Red Sea Bay

The Marsa Nakari House Reef offers a distinct and accessible diving experience within a sheltered bay, with easy entry directly from a wide, convenient beach. Divers fin out into a sandy-bottomed bay where the extensive coral reef begins almost immediately from the shoreline, stretching both north and south. This setup allows for gradual exploration from shallow, sunlit areas into deeper, more complex coral structures, making it ideal for extended bottom times and detailed observation.

The topography is defined by intricate coral formations that create varied habitats and natural channels, dictating the diver's path. The reef extends both north and south from the central entry point, offering distinct profiles. The health and diversity of the coral growth, including gardens of hard corals and gently swaying soft corals, are a testament to the protected nature of this site, supporting a vibrant ecosystem.

To the north, the reef showcases dense populations of hard corals, forming intricate labyrinths and overhangs. A highlight of the North Reef is an 'anemone city' found around 12 meters, a dense concentration of anemones hosting various clownfish and other symbiotic species. Further out, the reef slopes gently, leading to wall-like sections and large coral heads that rise from around 15 meters towards the surface, creating a dynamic landscape.

Heading south, the reef presents a different character with numerous distinctive pinnacles, rocks, and captivating swim-throughs and underwater passages. These formations create a dynamic environment, alive with hiding spots and pathways that encourage closer inspection, with the interplay of light and shadow adding visual interest. The arrangement of these features ensures that each dive can unfold differently, whether focusing on macro photography or absorbing the general reef scene.

Throughout the reef, a rich diversity of marine life can be encountered. Clownfish are common, often found guarding their anemone homes, alongside lionfish, parrotfish, and various moray eels. Blue-spotted stingrays rest on sandy patches, and well-camouflaged scorpionfish, stonefish, and crocodilefish blend into the reef structure. A notable feature within the bay is a mid-bay cleaning station, where divers can observe reef fish queuing up for a clean.

Keep a keen eye on the reef's surfaces and within its many crevices for fascinating macro life, including nudibranchs, delicate shrimp, and the uniquely camouflaged velvetfish. Patient observation might also reveal the artistry of ghost pipefish (genus Solenostomus) and the distinctive movements of seamoths, often blending seamlessly with their coral surroundings. Beyond the smaller inhabitants, it's common to spot turtles gracefully gliding through the water, often seen browsing on corals or resting on ledges.

The deeper sections of the reef on both sides eventually lead to a drop-off, where the environment shifts and larger pelagic species are occasionally sighted. While the bay itself is generally calm, the outer reef and drop-off areas can occasionally experience mild currents. These are typically manageable but require attention, especially when exploring the more exposed sections of the site. Occasional visitors like barracuda, whitetip reef sharks, and even dolphins, particularly near the drop-off, add a thrilling element to the dive, and schools of Indian mackerel may sweep past, adding dynamic energy to the bustling ecosystem.
