Shoni Bay, a premier dive site in Marsa Alam, offers a unique entry experience either directly from a long pier or via a straightforward shore entry from a sandy beach, with marked channels through the reef edge. This accessibility, coupled with the bay's sheltered nature, makes it an ideal introduction to the Red Sea's underwater world. The pier entry allows for a gentle transition, orienting divers to the shallow reef life before the main wall emerges, while the sandy beach provides a direct walk-in without the need for a pontoon or reef crossing.
As divers descend, the reef unfolds into a vibrant coral garden, characterized by a rich tapestry of both hard and soft corals that form an intricate mosaic across the bay's topography. The reef edge quickly forms a distinct wall, dropping to a maximum depth of 30 metres, not as a gradual slope but as a direct, richly covered face. This extensive coral coverage and intricate structure create a living tapestry, with light penetrating deeply to illuminate the vibrant colours and textures.
Amongst the coral formations, several small caves offer intriguing nooks and crannies for exploration, often favoured by various marine inhabitants. Beyond the main wall, on the southern side of the bay, additional coral blocks are found approximately 80 metres off the primary reef, providing further opportunities for discovery. Every overhang and crevice holds potential for encountering the reef's micro-fauna, rewarding patient and keen observation.
The resident marine life at Shoni Bay is particularly engaging, with constant motion from larger fish schools. Shoals of fusiliers (Caesionidae spp.) shimmer in the blue, their synchronized movements creating dynamic silver curtains. They are often joined by elegant bannerfish (Heniochus diphreutes) and sleek mackerel (Scombridae), darting through the water column in impressive numbers, while moray eels (Muraenidae spp.) peek from their rocky hideouts.
Divers should also keep a close watch for venomous fish, such as lionfish (Pterois spp.), often poised majestically against the coral, and other masters of camouflage hiding within the coral blocks. Beyond these resident species, the site hosts larger visitors, with regular sightings of hawksbill and green turtles grazing on corals or resting in sheltered spots. On the deeper edge of the reef, reef sharks can be encountered, adding a dynamic element to the dive.
The character of Shoni Bay is defined by its shallow profile and accessibility, allowing ample light penetration that enhances the coral's brilliance and the clarity of the water. This luminosity makes for excellent conditions for photography and observation, giving divers time to appreciate the subtle details of marine life. The wall offers both brightly lit shallower sections for extended bottom time and deeper areas for those certified to venture further, encouraging multiple dives to truly appreciate its nuances.
Shoni Bay offers a maximum diving depth of 30 metres, with a tranquil shallow coral garden at 15 metres. It is accessible for certified divers of varying experience levels, including less experienced divers, due to its easy sandy entry and sheltered bay conditions. Currents are generally variable but not typically strong or consistent, allowing for comfortable exploration.
