Once you have cleared immigration, Atlanta is the smoothest of the American hubs: seven concourses linked airside by a free train. The awkward part comes first, and permission to enter the United States is not optional.

How long is your layover?
2 hrs
Between domestic flights, it is straightforward. Arriving from abroad, it is not.
- ⭐ Every concourse, from T to F, is linked airside by a free automated train running continuously and by a moving-walkway pedestrian tunnel. You do not leave the secure area or clear security again. Among the four American hubs covered here, this is the least troublesome.
- ⚠️ That only applies AFTER immigration. Off an international flight, you clear immigration and customs, collect your bags, then go through security again before joining your connection.
- The published minimums are fifty-five minutes between two domestic flights, and ninety minutes when an international flight is involved. In practice, allow two hours to two and a half hours when arriving internationally.
- ⚠️ PASSPORT CONTROL IS THE FIRST BOTTLENECK, and it has a busy spell: eight to thirty minutes normally, but up to SEVENTY-FIVE MINUTES ON SUNDAYS IN THE EARLY AFTERNOON. Security afterwards adds fifteen to thirty minutes off-peak, and more between five and nine o’clock, then between sixteen and nineteen o’clock. If you land on a Sunday afternoon, the statutory ninety minutes will not do.

The tunnel between concourses doubles as an exhibition. Walk it.
- Airport Wi-Fi is free once you accept the terms and conditions.
- The pedestrian tunnel between concourses carries an art trail as well as moving walkways. It is free, quiet, and preferable to sitting beneath the announcements. At Atlanta, walking is the best-designed free diversion.
- ⚠️ There are no public showers and no reliable luggage storage airside. Spas in several concourses offer paid treatments without status requirements if you merely need to loosen up.
5–10 hrs
As everywhere in the United States, permission to enter determines whether you can board.
- VISA REQUIRED ALWAYS. There is no sterile transit in the United States. Even to change aircraft, you must be authorised to enter: eligible passports require electronic authorisation ONLINE before departure; everyone else needs a visa.
- ⚠️ Some travel history removes your eligibility for the visa-waiver programme and means a proper visa, with its own lead times. Check when you book.
- Once you are through immigration, Atlanta city centre is connected to the airport by urban rail, making an outing realistic beyond six hours.
- The airport does not run city tours.
10 hrs +
Sleep nearby: the area is full of hotels, all with shuttles.
- ⚠️ There is no hotel airside. You will have passed through immigration in any case.
- VISA REQUIRED dozens of hotel brands surround the airport, nearly all with free shuttles. It is one of the easier places in the world to find a room at any hour.
- The hourly private cabins in the concourses will do if you would rather not go out, but they do not replace a night’s sleep.
- No airline free-night scheme applies to a stopover you chose yourself.
What catches travellers out
There is no international transit in the United States
Even from one international flight to another, you enter the country: immigration, baggage, customs, re-checking and security. That applies at Atlanta just as it does at Miami, Houston or Dallas.
Ninety minutes is the system’s number
It assumes a short immigration queue and prompt baggage delivery. On an international arrival, two hours to two and a half hours is the sensible allowance particularly if you are waiting for an outsized dive bag.
No public showers and no reliable luggage storage
At the world’s busiest airport, you might expect everything. Not here: washing means using a lounge, and there is no reliable luggage-storage service airside.

In Concourse F, the international concourse, you can buy day access to a lounge without a card or airline status.
This is the American wrinkle: most Atlanta lounges belong to an airline or card issuer and cannot simply be bought at the door. The Concourse F lounge is the exception.
There are no public showers at Atlanta. Lounge showers are the only option, which matters after a transatlantic flight followed by a hop to the Caribbean.
⚠️ It is in Concourse F, the international concourse. Every concourse is linked airside, so you can reach it from anywhere but allow for the train journey.
Private cabins can be hired by the hour in several concourses if the lounge is not for you. They are not hotel rooms: you can close your eyes, rather than properly sleep.
Expect the equivalent of a sit-down airport meal for three hours of peace.

- It is the shortest-address option in the area, useful when your onward flight leaves early.
- Like everything here, it requires you to have cleared immigration which you will do anyway.

- Dozens of others sit at a similar distance: judge them by the overnight shuttle rather than the sign above the entrance.

The diver’s reflex
Your dive bag comes back onto the belt on arrival
As everywhere in the United States, there is no international through-transfer: you collect the bag, take it through customs, then re-check it for Roatán, Belize or Grand Cayman. Lock it with a lock that US security can open without cutting it, otherwise they will cut it.
After immigration, the connection becomes easy
That is Atlanta’s good news, and worth stating plainly: once you are in, every concourse is linked airside by a free train. You will not clear another checkpoint, even when crossing the whole airport. Put your margin into the first stage immigration and the baggage belt not the second.
No ‘diving’ allowance here the scales decide
The good news first: the local airline has removed the supplement it once charged for dive equipment. Your bag is now treated as an ordinary suitcase, which is simpler and often cheaper. The catch is that nothing now protects its bulk: the excess-weight threshold starts at 23 kg, and above 292 cm combined dimensions or 45 kg, the bag is refused not charged, refused. One final point, written down and rarely read: sports equipment must travel in protective packaging designed for it. A large ordinary holdall does not meet that requirement.
