At DFW, a free train links all five terminals airside, and two hotels sit in the terminal buildings themselves. The American catch remains: your connection is an entry into the country.

How long is your layover?
2 hrs
Between terminals, this is the smoothest of the four. On an international arrival, it is not.
- ⭐ A free automated train links all FIVE terminals inside the secure area, 24 hours a day, every two minutes. The average journey is five minutes, nine at most between the furthest points with no security check to repeat.
- ⚠️ That only applies once you are through. On an international arrival, you clear immigration, collect your bags, clear customs, recheck them and clear security again before taking the train.
- Published minimums are thirty minutes between domestic flights, sixty from a domestic flight to an international one, and ninety on an international arrival. In practice, allow ninety to one hundred and twenty minutes on arrival.
2–5 hrs
Unlimited Wi-Fi, free water, and a train when you need a change of scene.
- Wi-Fi is free and unlimited in every terminal once you accept the terms.
- Bottle-filling points are available after security. Fill your bottle rather than buying water.
- ⚠️ There are no public showers. Washing means using a lounge but the choice is broad here, and the train gets you there without another security check.
- All five terminals remain open at all times, which matters on an overnight stop.
5–10 hrs
As everywhere in the United States, authorisation determines whether you board.
- VISA REQUIRED, ALWAYS there is no sterile transit in the United States. Even when changing planes for Cozumel or Grand Cayman, you must be authorised to enter: online electronic authorisation before departure, or a visa.
- ⚠️ Some travel history removes your eligibility for the visa-waiver programme. Check when you book.
- A train links the airport with nearby cities, but Dallas and Fort Worth are a long way off: during a stopover, your time is better spent in a lounge or a room than in transport.
- The airport runs no city tours.
10 hrs +
⭐ Two hotels are in the terminals including one in the international terminal.
- This is Dallas’s decisive advantage over the other three American hubs: one hotel occupies the international terminal and another an domestic terminal. You walk there with your kit. No shuttle, no taxi.
- ⚠️ They are landside, as everything is in the United States: you will have cleared immigration anyway.
- Choose the hotel in your DEPARTURE terminal if your next flight leaves early even with the train linking everything, minutes saved after waking are better than a connection taken at a run.
- The surrounding area also has numerous hotel chains with shuttles, often cheaper.
- ⚠️ THE TERMINALS STAY OPEN, BUT THE DEPARTURE AREA DOES NOT. Security closes at around 1 am and reopens only between 3.30 am and 4.30 am: you are sent landside for the night and cannot clear security the evening before a morning flight. A landside bed solves this; a chair by the gate does not.
What catches travellers out
There is no international transit in the United States
Even from one international flight to another, you enter the country: immigration, baggage collection, customs, recheck and security. The airside train changes nothing about that first stage.
Thirty minutes is for two domestic flights
That very short minimum can make DFW look quick in every circumstance. It applies only between two domestic flights. On an international arrival, guides advise ninety to one hundred and twenty minutes, and more if you are waiting for an oversized bag.
No public showers
At an airport of this size and level of equipment, you expect to find them. You will not: washing means entering a lounge. Fortunately, there is plenty of choice.

Terminal D, used for international flights, has several lounges available for individual entry the broadest choice among the American hubs covered here.
This is the American exception: where Miami, Atlanta and Houston offer only one or two pay-to-enter lounges near the gate, Dallas has several in Terminal D and another in Terminal E.
None requires status or a business-class ticket. You pay for entry and go in.
DFW has no public showers. Lounge showers are therefore the way to feel human again between a transatlantic flight and a Caribbean departure.
⚠️ The train linking all five terminals runs AIRSIDE, so you can reach Terminal D from anywhere without another security check. That is unusual. Use it.
Expect the equivalent of an airport sit-down meal for three hours of peace.

- You reach it on foot from the international terminal, without shuttle or taxi which makes all the difference with a dive bag at midnight.
- International flights also depart from this terminal: you sleep a few minutes from your gate.

The diver’s reflex
Your bag comes back on the belt, then takes the train with you
As everywhere in the United States, there is no international airside connection: you collect your dive bag on arrival, take it through customs, then recheck it for Cozumel, Belize City or Grand Cayman. The useful part comes afterwards: once that is done, the airside train takes you anywhere without another check. Put your time margin into the arrival, not the onward transfer.

It is unusual enough to be worth stating: a hotel occupies Terminal D, from which international flights depart. On an overnight stop with 25 kilos of kit, that removes the taxi, shuttle, waiting and second journey in the morning. Of the four American hubs covered here, it is the best answer to the question of where to sleep.
In a soft bag, your kit is no longer covered
The local airline puts this in black and white, and it is the most expensive line on its baggage page: damage to sports equipment is compensated under TWO conditions the case must be rigid, and its exterior must show visible damage. A soft bag, even stuffed with foam, is treated as a fragile item: you sign and carry the risk. Between a regulator, computer and housing, a dive bag’s contents can be worth the trip itself. A hard case is not a photographer’s luxury; it is the written condition for compensation.
