In the United States, a connection is not treated as transit: even when you are changing aircraft for Bonaire or Roatán, you enter the country. That means immigration, your dive bag on the belt, and clearance arranged before departure.

How long is your layover?
2 hrs
⚠️ 2 hours is not enough when you arrive from abroad. It simply is not.
- ⚠️ MIAMI HAS NO INTERNATIONAL TRANSIT CORRIDOR. Even between two international flights, you clear immigration, collect your bags, clear customs, re-check them and go through security again.
- The published minimums make the point quietly: 30 min between domestic flights, but 90 min whenever an international flight is involved, in either direction.
- The terminal is one U-shaped building, divided into three areas and six concourses, linked on foot by corridors and moving walkways. The distances are real, so allow plenty of time.
2–5 hrs
You will be landside anyway, so you may as well make use of it.
- Airport Wi-Fi is free in the terminals.
- There is plenty of seating, while the airport promotes its art spaces and exhibitions as a way to fill a short stopover. They are free, and preferable to another corridor.
- ⚠️ There are no public showers and no airside left-luggage facility. A wash means using a lounge.
- As you will have collected your bags at immigration anyway, the useful question is not what to do airside but how much time remains after you have done the whole process again.
5–10 hrs
Entry clearance is not optional here; it determines whether you can board.
- VISA REQUIRED always, and that is not a figure of speech. With no sterile transit, you must be cleared to enter the United States even for a simple connection. For eligible European passports, this means electronic travel authorisation requested ONLINE before departure; otherwise, a transit visa.
- ⚠️ It can be refused, and some previous travel can remove eligibility for the waiver programme and require a full visa. Apply when you book, not the day before: this is the one item here that can leave you on the ground.
- Once you have entered, Miami is within reach: public transport links the city and airport, and a six-hour stopover lets you see something other than a concourse.
- The airport runs no city tour.
10 hrs +
Sleep. For once, there is a hotel in the terminal itself.
- A hotel occupies the terminal, removing the need for a shuttle or taxi. On an overnight stop with dive kit, that is the point that matters.
- The airport area also has around 30 hotel brands, all served by shuttle, across every level of comfort.
- ⚠️ In either case, you will have cleared immigration. That is not a choice; it is the American rule.
- No airline complimentary overnight programme is documented for a stopover you chose yourself.
- If your connection is the flight to KEY WEST, an overnight stay is often unavoidable: there are no departures before 8 hours in the timetable, with the first between 8 hours 20 and 8 hours 45. It leaves from Concourse D on a small regional jet, where the hold is narrower than on a long-haul aircraft.
What catches travellers out
There is no international transit in the United States
This is the costliest trap in these guides because it contradicts what applies almost everywhere else. There is no sterile corridor and no exception: from one international flight to another, you enter the country, collect your bags and start again.
Entry clearance can be refused
It is not an automatic formality. Some previous travel removes eligibility for the waiver programme, requiring a full visa with an appointment and lead time. Check when you book, not when you set off.
The terminal is U-shaped, and its ends are far apart
You read “one terminal” and relax. It has six concourses across three areas, linked on foot. End to end, the walk takes tens of minutes, moving walkways included.

Two Miami lounges sell single-entry access. They are the exception in an airport where nearly everything else depends on a particular credit card or airline status.
This is the American arrangement: most lounges here require a particular credit card, loyalty status or business-class ticket. The much-filmed premium-card lounge is one of them; you cannot pay at the door.

Miami has no public showers. Lounge showers are the only option, which matters after a transatlantic flight and before the Caribbean hop.
⚠️ Check your concourse before setting off: the terminal is U-shaped and its ends are a fair distance apart.
Expect the equivalent of an airport sit-down meal for three hours somewhere quiet.

- This is the shortest possible hotel transfer at the airport, and the only address requiring no journey at all.
- ⚠️ As everywhere in the United States, it requires clearing immigration which you will do anyway.

- Choose this when the stopover calls for proper sleep rather than a few hours' respite.

The diver’s reflex
⭐ Your dive bag comes back onto the belt, whatever happens
This is the major difference between Miami and the other hubs in these guides. Elsewhere, an international connection leaves your bags in the hold until the final destination. Here there is no sterile transit: you collect the bag on arrival, take it through customs, then re-check it for Bonaire, Roatán or Cozumel. Build that into your timing and lock the bag with a lock US security can open without cutting it off.
Entry clearance is required even if you never leave the airport
Many travellers assume a connection does not count. In the United States, it does: changing aircraft means entering the country. Electronic travel authorisation is requested online before travel, has no equivalent at a desk, and the airline checks it exists BEFORE allowing you to board in Europe. It is the only formality here that can cancel your diving trip.
⭐ Departing Madrid, no side of your bag may exceed 110 cm
This is decided before you reach Miami, which is why it catches people out. The airline applies a limit to departures from Madrid that it does not apply elsewhere: no SIDE of a checked bag may exceed 110 cm. The total of all three dimensions remains 292 cm. In other words, a long, flat bag a fin bag or a standard wheeled dive bag can meet the total yet fail on length. If your Caribbean flight departs Spain, measure the longest side before packing, not at the Barajas desk.
90 min is the published minimum not the time you really have
That figure assumes a short immigration queue, your bag arriving promptly, customs taking no interest in you, and bag re-check being open. With an oversized dive bag and security likely to inspect your batteries, allow three hours. On an island connection, the next flight is often tomorrow.
