At Velana, your stopover is measured not just in hours but in daylight: seaplanes stop flying after mid-afternoon. If your flight lands at 16 h, you are not transferring onwards. You are spending the night in Malé.

How long is your layover?
2 hrs
Two hours is not enough here and walking is not the main problem.
- Velana does not operate as one terminal but as three separate places: the international terminal, the domestic terminal and the seaplane terminals on the waterfront. None connects to another airside.
- From the international terminal to the domestic terminal, allow 15 to 20 minutes on foot, outside along the airport road. ⚠️ Older guides mention “a few minutes”. They are no longer right.
- For the seaplane terminals, you take a minibus journey of around ten minutes, arranged by your resort or operator not a public shuttle to be picked up on a whim.
- In every case, you pass through immigration: joining a domestic flight or seaplane means entering the Maldives, then clearing security again for the next departure.
2–5 hrs
There is little free comfort here. The terminal was not built for waiting.
- There is no proper rest area, no cabin and no free shower: terminal seating, and that is all. A lounge is the only place where you can properly settle in.
- Terminal Wi-Fi is free but time-limited; lounge Wi-Fi is not. Send what needs sending when you arrive.
- A paid left-luggage service is available in the domestic terminal, on the departures side. It is useful if you leave the bulk of your kit behind before going for a walk.
- ⚠️ Les comptoirs domestiques et hydravions ferment 45 à 60 minutes avant le départ. Entre un vol international en retard et une file d’immigration, c’est cette fermeture-là qui fait manquer le transfert, pas l’horaire du vol.
5–10 hrs
This is the slot where the time of day matters more than the length of the stop.
- ⚠️ Check the TIME first, not the duration. Seaplanes fly only in daylight: after mid-afternoon, there are no more departures, and an eight-hour stop beginning at 15 h gets you nowhere.
- VISA REQUIRED entry to the Maldives is on a free tourist visa issued on arrival, valid for thirty days. You need a valid passport, an onward ticket, proof of funds and ⚠️ A CONFIRMED ACCOMMODATION BOOKING including for a single transit night.
- ⚠️ Staying for less than twenty-four hours changes nothing: leaving the airport is legally a tourist entry, with the same visa and supporting documents. There is no “just having a look” status.
- The airport runs no city tours. Trips to Malé or Hulhumalé are arranged through agencies or resorts and must be booked in advance.
10 hrs +
You sleep on land. There is nothing inside the terminals, not even a cabin.
- ⚠️ Velana’s terminals have no hotel, no cabin and no sleeping area. You must spend the night after immigration.
- VISA REQUIRED the airport-island hotel is seven hundred metres from the terminal: walk there in five to ten minutes, or use its free shuttle for guests. It also offers a day-use arrangement, letting you use a room for several hours without staying overnight.
- VISA REQUIRED Hulhumalé, the neighbouring island linked by a bridge, is five to fifteen minutes away by taxi and has the cheaper transit guesthouses.
- ⚠️ Book BEFORE you land. This is not merely for comfort: the visa issued on arrival requires a confirmed accommodation booking. Arriving in the evening with nothing arranged and a seaplane the next morning makes the immigration desk needlessly difficult.
What catches travellers out
The three terminals do not connect
International, domestic and seaplane operations are three separate places. From the first to the second, it is 15 to 20 minutes’ walk outside along the road older guides describing “a few minutes” are describing an airport that no longer exists.
There is nowhere to sleep in the airport
No transit hotel, no cabin and no proper rest area. At an airport serving the world on its way to resorts, you might assume otherwise. The night is spent on land, after immigration, and booked in advance.
A few hours outside still counts as a tourist entry
The Maldives does not offer a courtesy transit arrangement: once you cross immigration, even for half a day, you need the tourist visa and its supporting documents. Have them ready rather than discovering this in the queue.
Why not wait it out in peace?

The lounge that matters is not in the international terminal but the Moonimaa Lounge in the domestic terminal where you wait for your flight to the atoll.
It is Velana’s only lounge available as a standalone purchase, with no membership card or airline status required. The others in the international terminal and the seaplane terminals require a ticket, status or a resort package.
It is landside, before domestic check-in. That changes little: you have entered the Maldives anyway to reach your onward flight.
You get seats, unlimited Wi-Fi, something to eat, and a shower when available. After an overnight flight and before hours spent waiting by the water, it is the airport’s only accessible shower.
The terminal itself has no proper rest area and no free shower. Just terminal seats, which is rather the point.
Expect the equivalent of a sit-down airport meal for a few quiet hours.

The airport island’s only hotel, seven hundred metres from the terminal on foot.
- It is five to ten minutes’ walk away, or you can use the hotel’s free shuttle reserved for guests. With dive kit, it is the simplest address in the whole archipelago.
- A day-use arrangement lets you take a room for several hours: useful when a seaplane the following morning leaves you waiting without needing a full night.
- As everywhere here, you must clear immigration to reach it which you will do anyway for your onward flight.

Considerably cheaper, five to fifteen minutes away by taxi across the bridge.
- The neighbouring island has the transit accommodation used by travellers waiting for a domestic flight or seaplane.
- Allow for a taxi in both directions, including a very early one: seaplanes leave at sunrise.
The diver’s reflex
⭐ Seaplanes do not fly at night check this BEFORE booking your flight
This is the most useful thing to know about this airport. Seaplanes operate only in daylight, broadly from sunrise until mid-afternoon. If your international flight lands after 15 hours, you will not reach either your resort or your liveaboard that day: you need a night in Malé, at your own expense unless your travel organiser has included it. This is solved when you choose the long-haul flight time. Afterwards, it is not solved at all.
You will be asked where you are sleeping, even for one night
The Maldivian visa is free and issued on arrival, but requires a confirmed accommodation booking, an onward ticket and proof of funds. If you are joining a liveaboard the following morning, you may not have a hotel booking to show: ask your boat or agency for a document confirming where you will spend the night before you leave home.
Your power banks stay with you, not in the overhead locker
The domestic airline is stricter than the usual rule, and its policy also applies to the short hop to the atoll: a maximum of two power banks, one hundred watt-hours each, in the cabin, and they must stay with you in a pocket, on the seat or under the seat, never in the overhead locker. No in-flight charging. Spare batteries for your torches follow the usual arrangement: cabin baggage, terminals protected, refused above 160 Wh.
