Liquid Dive Adventures

Located in the coastal town of Tofo, Mozambique, Liquid Dive Adventures has established itself as a premier destination for divers seeking significant marine megafauna. Since its founding in 2014, the centre has grown from a modest operation into a comprehensive dive resort and ECO centre, focused on the unique biodiversity of the Mozambican coast.

The centre operates as a PADI 5 Star IDC and is recognised as a PADI Green Star Award Dive Center. This status reflects a deep-rooted commitment to marine conservation, integrating environmental protection into its daily operations and training programmes.

As a PADI Career Development centre, Liquid Dive Adventures provides a professional environment for those looking to advance their diving careers. The presence of resident PADI Course Directors makes it a primary hub for instructor training and professional development in the region.

The team maintains a family-oriented atmosphere, offering an international perspective to its guests. Their approach is heavily influenced by conservation, being the first Shark Guardian centre in Africa and incorporating Project AWARE principles into all aspects of their teaching.

The course catalogue is extensive, covering the entire PADI spectrum. Beginners can start with the PADI Open Water Diver course, with the option to include Nitrox training. More experienced divers can progress through the Advanced Open Water Diver, Rescue Diver, and Divemaster programmes.

For those pursuing a professional career, the centre is a specialist IDC hub, offering instructor training and various specialty training modules. They also run specialised awareness courses, such as Manta Awareness, Shark Conservation, Whale Shark Awareness, and Sea Turtle Awareness, alongside technical skills like Peak Performance Buoyancy and Underwater Navigation.

The centre operates two boats to service its various dive sites around Tofo. These vessels allow for access to both the shallow reef flats and the deeper offshore sites where the larger pelagics are found.

Nitrox is available for use on the boats, facilitating longer bottom times on the deeper sites. The centre also organises night dives and specialised whale watching excursions during the appropriate seasons.

The centre provides full equipment hire for divers who do not wish to travel with their own kit. This includes regulators, BCDs, wetsuits, fins, and masks. For night dives, torches are available to ensure you can explore the reefs after dark.

Nitrox is available on-site, with fills provided for those looking to extend their no-decompression limits. The facility is designed to support both training and recreational divers with all the necessary shore-based amenities.

The waters around Tofo are famous for their large pelagics. You can regularly encounter whale sharks (Rhincodon typus), manta rays, and various species of sharks, including whitetip reef sharks (Triaenodon obesus), grey reef sharks (Carcharhinus amblyrhynchos), and leopard sharks (Triakis semifasciata). During the winter months, from June to November, humpback whales are a significant seasonal highlight.

In the blue, you may spot hammerhead sharks, eagle rays (Aetobatus), and various species of jacks (Carangidae). Large groupers (Epinephelus) and barracudas are also common residents of the deeper reefs and cleaning stations.

For those interested in macro life, the reefs offer incredible diversity. Look closely for nudibranchs (Chromodoris willani), octopus (Octopus vulgaris), and various species of shrimp (Caridea). You can also find colourful reef fish, including parrotfish (Calotomus), triggerfish (Balistidae), and various species of anemonefish.

Small creatures like peacock mantis shrimps, various species of crabs, and lobster (Homaridae) inhabit the crevices and coral heads. The reef is also home to many species of sea anemones and sponges (Porifera), providing a rich habitat for the local marine life.

The diving environment in Tofo can vary daily, with deeper sites often being subject to currents. Some sites, like Hogwarts, can experience unpredictable current patterns and may require a negative entry. Sites like Giant's Castle are specifically suited for days when the current is stronger.

Shallow reef sites can be more affected by swell rather than current. While the summer months generally offer calmer seas, the months of August and September can bring windy conditions that make surface conditions more agitated.
