Adventure Mania

Located within the Isimangaliso Park, Adventure Mania serves as a central hub for diving in Sodwana Bay. Owned and operated by Jacques and Amanda van Jaarsveld, the centre is built on decades of diving expertise and a profound commitment to the local marine environment.

As a PADI Eco Center, the team integrates conservation into their daily operations, organising beach clean-ups and environmental workshops. This approach ensures that your time on the water contributes to the preservation of the vibrant coral ecosystems that make this region so significant.

The centre is a family business, which creates a welcoming atmosphere where divers are treated like members of an extended family. Jacques and Amanda lead the operation, bringing a lifelong dedication to underwater exploration to every trip.

The team is focused on providing safe, educational, and personalised diving. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced diver, the guides aim to tailor the experience to your specific needs and skill level.

The centre offers a comprehensive range of PADI training programmes. Beginners can start with the PADI Discover Scuba Diving course or progress through the PADI Open Water Diver and Junior Open Water Diver certifications.

For more experienced divers, advanced training is available through the PADI Advanced Open Water Course, the PADI Deep Specialty Course, and the PADI Navigation Specialty. The centre also provides the PADI Rescue Diver Course and Emergency First Response training. Specialist courses include the PADI Enriched Air Diver Course and the PADI Underwater Naturalist programme.

Adventure Mania provides Nitrox for divers looking to extend their bottom time. The centre also maintains oxygen safety equipment on-site for emergency response.

For those staying on-site, accommodation is available at the Sodwana Bay Lodge, situated 6 km from the beach behind the vegetated dunes. The lodge offers various units, including non-self-catering options with twin or double beds, air conditioning, and private balconies.

The reefs are home to a wide array of larger marine life, including green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas), manta rays (Mobula alfredi), and various species of sharks such as whitetip reef sharks (Triaenodon obesus), grey reef sharks, and bull sharks. You will also encounter dolphins (Delphinidae), rays (Batoidea), and large schools of snapper (Lutjanus) and fusilier (Caesio).

Macro enthusiasts will find plenty to observe, including various nudibranchs, such as the Bornella valdae nudibranch, as well as octopus (Octopus vulgaris), shrimp (Caridea), and scorpionfish (Scorpaenidae). Look closely for frogfish (Antennarius), pipefish, and various species of anemonefish.

The reef structure itself is built upon a foundation of sponges, sea fans (Gorgoniidae), and various corals. You can find many species of colourful reef fish, including angelfish, pufferfish (Arothron hispidus), and lionfish.

August is a significant month for seasonal sightings, particularly for hammerhead sharks, thresher sharks, and oceanic whitetip sharks. The Sardine Run also brings unique activity to the area.

Diving in the area involves navigating a variety of topographies, from flat reefs to steep walls and deep cornices. Some sites, such as Two Mile Reef, can experience changing currents that divers should be prepared for.
