Pisces Diving Charter-Sodwana Bay

Pisces Diving has been a fixture of the Sodwana Bay diving community since 1994. Located at the edge of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, the first UNESCO World Heritage site in South Africa, the centre operates from a highly preserved marine environment.

Whether you are looking for a structured course or a guided drift dive along the outer reefs, the focus is on professional service and environmental respect. The team uses their deep local knowledge to tailor trips to your specific qualifications and interests, ensuring you see the best the bay has to offer.

As a PADI 5 Star Eco centre and a digital member of Green Fins, Pisces Diving integrates conservation into its daily operations. The team is highly trained, with Dive Masters who have completed specific reef orientation and fish identification courses to enhance your underwater experience.

Before and after every dive, the dive leader conducts a briefing at the centre's gazebo. These sessions use marine reference books to help you identify the species you are likely to encounter, providing a more educational experience for both recreational and photography-focused divers.

The centre offers a comprehensive range of PADI courses, beginning with Discover Scuba Diving and Bubblemaker for those new to the water. For those working towards certification, they provide Open Water Diver, Advanced Open Water Diver, and Rescue Diver training.

Speciality courses are extensive, covering areas such as Enriched Air (Nitrox) Diver, Deep Diver Specialty, Navigation Specialty, and Peak Performance Buoyancy. They also offer professional training up to the Divemaster level, alongside environmental programmes like PADI AWARE Coral Reef and Dive Against Debris.

The centre operates Impi, an 8-metre orange semi-rigid super duck designed specifically for comfort and utility. It is powered by twin 115 HP Mercury engines, providing reliable transit to the various reef systems.

Impi has a capacity of 9 divers even when carrying double cylinders, and the layout offers ample space for technical equipment and sophisticated camera setups. The boat is well-equipped for various dive types, including night dives, and provides a stable platform for exploring the bay.

Full equipment hire is available on-site for those travelling without their own kit. For those bringing their own gear, the centre provides freshwater buckets specifically for rinsing cameras and dive computers.

Environmental responsibility extends to kit maintenance, as the team uses eco-friendly shampoo to wash equipment after use. The centre is set up to support both recreational divers and those looking to make long, relaxed bottom times without the rush.

The reefs are teeming with large pelagics and colourful schooling fish. You can expect to see snapper schools, slingers, fusiliers, and bluefin trevallies. Larger visitors include manta rays (Mobula alfredi), dolphins (Delphinidae), and various shark species, including bull sharks and hammerhead sharks. During the months of June to October, humpback whales are also present in the area.

For those interested in macro life, the reefs host a vast array of invertebrates. Keep an eye out for the Bornella valdae nudibranch, various other nudibranchs, octopus (Octopus vulgaris), cuttlefish (Sepiidae), and shrimp (Caridea). You may also encounter scorpionfish (Scorpaenidae), pipefish (Solenostomidae), and ghost pipefish (Solenostomidae).

The reef structure itself is a vibrant landscape of life, featuring sea fans (Gorgoniidae), whip corals, sponge corals, and various sea anemones (Actiniaria). Large parrotfishes, moray eels (Muraenidae), and potato groupers are common residents of these coral gardens.

The reefs in Sodwana Bay can experience moderate to strong currents, particularly on the outer reefs between December and February. Tidal currents can also be deceptive and should be accounted for during dive planning.

Launching the boat typically involves navigating surf conditions. While the bay is generally well-protected, the swell can vary depending on the season.
